King James wording
King James Version
And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.THE KEY
The Hebrew repeats one root for Abraham’s haste and Sarah’s command, placing the urgency of welcome in both of their hands.
THE MEANING
Welcome takes shape in you as joined action: one person carries the need, another turns flour into food. The repeated haste gives that care immediacy, while meal, kneading, and fire make provision tangible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse dissolves the belief that welcome is only an inward feeling; here, welcome takes the shape of flour worked into food.
THE ROOT
וַיְמַהֵר
waymaher
GROWS FROM
מהר
To hurry, hasten, or move swiftly (mahar).
“hurried” in this verse is waymaher. The verse uses מהר first for Abraham’s movement and again in Sarah’s command to hurry. English separates these into “hastened” and “quickly”; Hebrew lets you hear one urgency pass from one person to another as food is prepared.
ALSO GROWS
mahari: Hurry!; hasten!
מַהֲרִי
Sarah’s command uses another form of the same root, carrying the urgency from Abraham’s movement into her preparation.
meherah: Haste; quickly; soon.
מְהֵרָה
This form carries the same root into the pace of an action, extending the idea of swift movement beyond the person who hurries.
THE PATTERN
Provision takes form when readiness moves from intention into prepared food.
And he took curds and milk, and the son of the herd which he had made, and set it before them, and stood beside them under the tree, and they ate.And Elijah said to her, Do not fear; go and do according to your word, but first make me a little loaf from it, and bring it out to me, and afterward make for yourself and for your son.And it happened, as he lay down at table with them, that he took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and handed it to them.THE THREAD
Do not let your mouth be startled, and do not let your heart hurry to bring a word out before the face of God. For God is in the heavens, and you are on the earth. Therefore let your words be few.The same מהר root describes a heart hurrying to speak before God. Its urgency takes a different shape here: haste is directed toward preparing food, while Ecclesiastes checks it in speech.
