King James wording
King James Version
And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.THE KEY
The Hebrew makes hospitality insistent: welcome moves the visitors from the road into a house and a meal through Lot’s urging.
THE MEANING
Welcome takes shape as an opened home, prepared food, and a place to eat. Lot’s insistence carries the invitation into shelter and provision, so hospitality is more than words here.
THE ROOT
וַיִּפְצַר
vayyiftzar
GROWS FROM
פצר
To press or urge persistently.
“pressed” in this verse is vayyiftzar. This root also describes Jacob urging Esau to accept a gift and Saul’s servants pressing him to eat. Its sense joins pressure with insistent urging: Lot’s welcome is not a passing offer but an effort that brings the visitors inside and to a meal.
ALSO GROWS
vayyiftzar-bo: He urged him (Genesis 33:11).
וַיִּפְצַר־בּוֹ
Jacob uses the same root to press Esau to receive his offered gift, showing how urging can carry an offer into acceptance.
vayyiftzeru-bo: They pressed him (1 Samuel 28:23).
וַיִּפְצְרוּ־בוֹ
Saul’s servants use the root as they urge him to eat, another scene where insistent concern takes the form of food.
THE PATTERN
Hospitality becomes tangible when welcome turns into shelter and provision.
And he took curds and milk, and the son of the herd which he had made, and set it before them, and stood beside them under the tree, and they ate.But they pressed him, saying, Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day has already leaned. And he went in to stay with them. And when she was immersed, and her household, she urged us, saying, If you have judged me steady in the Lord, come into my house and stay there. And she pressed us.THE THREAD
Take, please, my blessing that has been brought to you, because God has favored me, and because I have everything. And he pressed him, and he took it.The same Hebrew root describes Lot pressing the visitors and Jacob urging Esau to receive a gift. In both scenes, the urging carries an offered welcome or blessing into someone’s hands.
