King James wording
King James Version
And they made their father drink wine that night: and the firstborn went in, and lay with her father; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.THE KEY
The Hebrew root behind “perceived not” can also name sexual intimacy, placing the father’s unawareness beside the act itself in one stark word-family.
THE MEANING
Wine leaves the father unable to register the act: his firstborn lies with him, and he does not know when she lies down or rises. The verse holds the incest and his unawareness together, showing how a person can be physically present while perception is absent and vulnerability remains.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being physically present, or unable to resist, proves that someone is aware of and consenting to what is happening.
THE ROOT
יָדַע
yādaʿ
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
to know, recognize, or perceive
The phrase לֹא יָדַע (lo yadaʿ, “he did not know or perceive”) makes his lack of awareness explicit. The same root can describe knowing someone sexually, as in Genesis 4:1, but here the negation and the surrounding action keep his unawareness in view.
ALSO GROWS
vayyēdaʿ: knew; in context, had sexual relations
וַיֵּדַע
Genesis 4:1 uses this form of the same root for Adam’s intimacy with Eve; here, the negated form marks the father’s lack of awareness.
daʿat: knowledge or understanding
דַּעַת
This noun from the same root makes the contrast plain: the verse describes an absence of awareness, not simply a failure to see.
שָׁכַב
shākav
GROWS FROM
שכב
sh-k-b
to lie down or sleep; in context, to have sexual relations
“lay with / lay down” in this verse is shākav. The verse uses the same root for the firstborn’s sexual act and for the moment she lies down. The Hebrew keeps the euphemistic “lay with” close to the physical posture and timing the father does not perceive.
ALSO GROWS
vattishkav: she lay with; here, had sexual relations
וַתִּשְׁכַּב
This is the firstborn’s act with her father, stated through the root for lying down.
beshokhvah: when she lay down
בְּשִׁכְבָהּ
The same root appears as the verse marks the moment he does not perceive.
mishkāv: a bed or the act of lying down
מִשְׁכָּב
This related noun shows how the root can name the physical place or posture that frames the act.
THE PATTERN
Intoxication can blunt awareness and judgment, leaving a person exposed to what happens around them.
And he drank of the wine, and was drunk, and he was uncovered in the midst of his tent.Lest they drink and forget the statute, and twist the judgment of all who are bowed. And do not become drunk with wine, in which is excess, but be filled with the breath.THE THREAD
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, the gotten one, and she said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.Both verses use יָדַע (yādaʿ, “to know or perceive”). Genesis 4:1 uses the verb for sexual intimacy; here, the same root marks the father’s unawareness, sharpening the distance between the act and his perception of it.
