This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they made their father drink wine that night also: and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he perceived not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

Hebrew uses ⁨יָדַע⁩ (yādaʿ, “to know or perceive”) for sexual knowing elsewhere, so this verse places the father’s unknowing beside his daughter’s sexual act.

The younger daughter lies with her father after the sisters make him drink wine; he perceives neither the beginning nor the end of the act. His unawareness does not diminish the violation.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that an act stops being a violation when the person subjected to it does not know it is happening. Here, his ignorance conceals the act; it does not show consent.

יָדַע

yādaʿ

GROWS FROM

ידע

To know, perceive, or recognize.

“did not know” in this verse is yādaʿ. English “perceived” can sound like simple observation, but ⁨יָדַע⁩ (yādaʿ, “to know”) can also describe sexual union. Genesis places that knowing verb beside the daughter’s act, while making the father’s lack of knowledge explicit.

ALSO GROWS

yādaʿ: Know or perceive; in some contexts, have sexual relations.

יָדַע

Genesis 4:1 uses this verb for Adam’s sexual union with Eve, revealing how much broader its sense is than detached observation.

daʿat: Knowledge or knowing.

דַּעַת

The tree of the knowledge of good and evil in Genesis 2:9 uses this related form, showing knowledge as a capacity at the center of human experience.

שָׁכַב

shakab

GROWS FROM

שכב

To lie down; by context, to have sexual relations.

“lay with him” in this verse is shakab. The Hebrew verb ⁨שָׁכַב⁩ (shakab, “to lie down”) can name both bodily position and sexual intercourse. Beside the father’s failure to know, it makes the physical act and his unawareness inseparable parts of the verse.

ALSO GROWS

mishkav: A bed, couch, or place of lying down.

מִשְׁכָּב

Genesis 49:4 uses this related noun for Jacob’s bed, carrying the root from the act of lying down to the place where the body lies.

shokhev: A person who is lying down.

שֹׁכֵב

This participial form keeps the body’s posture visible within the root, even when the verb is used for sexual relations.

Intoxication can cloud awareness while acts and consequences continue beyond a person’s perception.

And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his little son had done to him.
Genesis 9:24 · SDVNoah’s awareness returns after the wine, and then he knows what has happened.
And do not become drunk with wine, in which is excess, but be filled with the breath.
Ephesians 5:18 · SDVThe verse names drunkenness as excess and sets it against being filled by another power.
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, the gotten one, and she said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.
Genesis 4:1 · SDV

Genesis 4:1 uses ⁨יָדַע⁩ (yādaʿ, “to know”) for sexual union: “Adam knew Eve his wife.” Here, that same verb is negated as the daughter lies with her father, placing sexual knowing beside his complete unknowing.
