King James wording
King James Version
And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,THE KEY
Hebrew moves from פֶּתַח (petaḥ, “opening”) to דֶּלֶת (delet, “door panel”): Lot crosses an opening, then closes a barrier behind himself.
THE MEANING
The verse places you at a threshold between a violent crowd and the people behind the door. Lot steps out toward the men and shuts the door after himself; the opening becomes a boundary, but the barrier does not make the threat disappear.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A closed door is not the same as safety: the crowd soon presses to break it.
THE ROOT
הַפֶּתְחָה
ha-petāḥāh
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
to open
English says “door” twice, but the Hebrew first has הַפֶּתְחָה (ha-petāḥāh, “at the entrance”) and then הַדֶּלֶת (ha-delet, “the door panel”). The verse moves from an opening Lot crosses to a barrier he closes, keeping the opening inside the image of the shut door.
ALSO GROWS
pātaḥ: to open, loosen
פָּתַח
This verb supplies the seed beneath petaḥ: the doorway is an opening.
petaḥ: opening, entrance, doorway
פֶּתַח
This noun names the first threshold Lot crosses as he goes out toward the men.
סָגַר
sāgar
GROWS FROM
סגר
s-g-r
to shut, close, enclose
“shut” in this verse is sāgar. The root makes the closure an active boundary: Lot shuts the door after himself. Its causative form can also mean handing someone over, so the root carries a further resonance of who is enclosed and who is exposed to another’s power.
ALSO GROWS
sāgar: to shut, close, enclose
סָגַר
This is the verb used here for Lot closing the door behind himself.
hisgîr: to hand over, deliver into someone’s power
הִסְגִּיר
This causative form extends the root toward the question of who is left exposed to whose power.
THE PATTERN
A threshold governs exposure by marking who remains inside, who is outside, and who may cross.
And those who came in, male and female of all flesh, came as God had commanded him, and the LORD shut him in.And you will take a bundle of hyssop, and immerse it in the blood that is in the basin; and you will strike the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin, and none of you will go out from the opening of his house until the morning.I am the door. Through me, if anyone enters, he shall be delivered, and shall go in and out, and shall find pasture.THE THREAD
But the men stretched out their hand, drew Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. The same root, סגר (sāgar, “shut”), closes the door again, this time after the men pull Lot back inside. The repeated closure makes the threshold a contested boundary: who is outside, who is inside, and who controls the door.
