King James wording
King James Version
Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.THE KEY
Creation is called complete together with its whole host, not as empty heavens and earth.
THE MEANING
You inhabit a world this verse presents as complete in both its realms and their full array. The heavens and earth are named along with all that belongs to them; the host is part of the finished whole.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that creation is an unfinished collection of separate parts dissolves here: the verse calls both its realms and their entire host finished.
THE ROOT
וַיְכֻלּוּ
vayekhullu
GROWS FROM
כלה
To reach completion or come to an end; in other forms, to bring something to completion or consume it.
The root holds completion and coming to an end together. “Finished” therefore carries both fulfillment and cessation: the created work reaches its full measure.
ALSO GROWS
kalah: To be complete or come to an end.
כָּלָה
This is the root’s sense of completion carried by “finished.”
killah: To complete, bring to an end, or consume.
כִּלָּה
This form shows the root’s sense of bringing something all the way to its end.
צְבָאָם
tseva’am
GROWS FROM
צבא
A company organized for service or conflict; a host or army.
“Host” names a gathered company, not a loose collection. The verse includes the full company belonging to the heavens and earth in what is complete.
ALSO GROWS
tsava: A host or army.
צָבָא
This branch makes the collective sense of “all the host” visible.
tsava: Service or appointed duty.
צָבָא
The same root can name a company by the service it performs, giving “host” a sense of an ordered company.
THE PATTERN
What creation brings to completion includes the full company of what belongs to it.
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you make them all; the earth is full of your possessions. For in him all things were created, the things in the heavens and the things on the earth, the seen and the unseen, whether seats or lordships or beginnings or authorities; all things have been created through him and toward him.THE THREAD
And on the seventh day God finished his work which he had made, and he stopped on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. The verb translated “ended” comes from the same root, כ־ל־ה (kalah, to complete or bring to an end), as “finished” here. The next verse unfolds that completion as the work reaching its end and God resting from it.
