This verse in the King James

King James wording
But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

The soil that will form the human is first watered by what rises from the earth.

The whole ground receives water as a mist rises from the earth. What sustains the soil comes up from the earth itself and reaches its surface. The next verse forms the human from that same ground.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The ground’s nourishment does not have to arrive from above: here, water rises from the earth and reaches its surface.

אֲדָמָה

adamah

GROWS FROM

אדם

The root carries the sense of redness; adamah means soil or ground, and adam names a human being.

Adamah, the soil, and Adam, the human formed from it in the next verse, belong to the same word-family. English separates “ground” and “man,” while Hebrew keeps the human tied to the watered earth from which the human takes shape.

ALSO GROWS

adam: human being; person

אָדָם

The next verse forms Adam from the dust of the adamah, bringing the human and the ground into one word-family.

adom: red; ruddy

אָדֹם

This branch preserves the root’s color sense, echoing the red earth associated with adamah.

Water received by the ground becomes provision that bears fruit and flows outward.

You visit the earth and give it drink; you enrich it greatly. The channels of God are full of waters. You set their grain firm, for so you have set it.
Psalm 65:9 · SDVThe earth receives water and is enriched so that it can produce food.
For as the rain comes down, and the snow from the heavens, and does not return there, but drenches the earth, and makes it bear and sprout, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater.
Isaiah 55:10 · SDVWater reaches the earth, and the watered ground brings forth seed and bread.
The one who leans his weight into me, as the writing has said, rivers of living waters will flow from his belly.
John 7:38 · SDVThe image moves from water received by the ground to living water flowing outward from within.
And the LORD God shaped the ground-being, Adam, from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and Adam became a living soul.
Genesis 2:7 · SDV

Adamah, the ground in this verse, shares its root with adam, the human formed from its dust in the next. The watered soil and the human are joined: the ground this verse prepares is the material from which the human takes shape.
