This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Abraham sojourned in the Philistines’ land many days.

Sojourning names a way to dwell for many days without turning presence into possession.

You can inhabit a place for a long time without that place becoming your possession or final belonging. Sojourning holds genuine presence and unsettled belonging together.

To reside as a sojourner or newcomer.

“sojourned” in this verse is wayyāgor. The verb comes from ⁨גוּר⁩ (gûr), to reside as a sojourner. Its word-family holds dwelling and outsider status together: a long stay does not, by itself, turn presence into possession.

A person can dwell in a place while remaining a sojourner there.

I am a stranger, one who has sat down among you. Give me a holding of a grave among you, that I may bury my dead from before my face.
Genesis 23:4 · SDVThe same life that stays in a land can still name itself as a stranger and sojourner within it.
By trust he dwelt alongside in the land of promise, as in another's land, settling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, co-heirs of the same promise.
Hebrews 11:9 · SDVEven within a promised place, dwelling remains distinct from settled possession.
Beloved, I urge you as those dwelling alongside, to hold yourselves away from the fleshly cravings, which march against your living soul.
1 Peter 2:11 · SDVThe image of being a stranger and pilgrim carries this same tension between being present and not being at home.
I am a stranger, one who has sat down among you. Give me a holding of a grave among you, that I may bury my dead from before my face.
Genesis 23:4 · SDV

The Hebrew ⁨גֵּר⁩ (gēr, sojourner) in Abraham’s later words comes from the same root, ⁨גוּר⁩ (gûr, to sojourn), as “sojourned” here. This verse names a way of dwelling; the later verse gives that dwelling its name.
