This verse in the King James

King James wording
And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:

The oath is anchored in the LORD’s own nature because its stated ground is Abraham’s refusal to hold back the son named as uniquely one.

You encounter an oath whose witness is the LORD’s own self, so its assurance rests in the speaker’s own nature. The verse keeps the cost visible: Abraham has not held back the son called uniquely one, and that act becomes the stated ground of the promise.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It dissolves the belief that a promise needs a witness greater than its speaker: here, the LORD swears by the LORD’s own self.

יְחִידֶךָ

yeḥîḏeḵā

GROWS FROM

יחד

yaḥad

To be one; to join or unite.

The word translated “only” belongs to a root that also expresses being together or united. It carries more than a count: the son is named as the uniquely one, the singular bond at the center of what Abraham does not hold back.

ALSO GROWS

yāḥîḏ: Only, unique, or solitary.

יָחִיד

It names the son’s singularity as more than a number.

yaḥad: Together, as one.

יַחַד

Its shared root links uniqueness with oneness and relation.

נִשְׁבַּעְתִּי

nishbaʿtî

GROWS FROM

שׁבע

sh-b-ʿ

To swear an oath; the same consonants also form the word for seven.

“sworn” in this verse is nishbaʿtî. Biblical Hebrew uses this root for both swearing and seven, so the oath carries a sound-link to the language of seven. Here, the LORD swears by the LORD’s own self, leaving no greater witness outside the speaker’s own nature.

ALSO GROWS

shevuʿāh: An oath or solemn pledge.

שְׁבוּעָה

It names the binding promise expressed by the verb in this verse.

shivʿāh: Seven.

שִׁבְעָה

Its shared consonants give the oath a resonance of fullness and completion.

When no greater witness stands above the promiser, assurance rests on the promiser’s own self and becomes visible in what is not withheld.

And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the young man, and do nothing to him, for now I perceive that you are in awe of God, since you have not held back your son, your only son, from me."
Genesis 22:12 · SDVThe same act of not withholding is named immediately before the oath, making the promise answer directly to what Abraham has held back nothing of.
For when God promised to Abraham, since he had none greater to swear by, he swore by himself,
Hebrews 6:13 · SDVThis verse states the logic of the oath directly: the promise rests on God’s own self because no greater witness stands above God.
He who did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all, how will he not also favor us with all things along with him?
Romans 8:32 · SDVThe language of not sparing a son again makes an unwithheld gift the ground for confidence in what follows.
And he said, "Do not stretch out your hand against the young man, and do nothing to him, for now I perceive that you are in awe of God, since you have not held back your son, your only son, from me."
Genesis 22:12 · SDV

The same verb repeats here and in Genesis 22:12: ⁨חָשַׂכְתָּ⁩ (ḥāśaḵtā, “you withheld”), from ⁨חָשַׂךְ⁩ (ḥāśaḵ, “to hold back or spare”). The earlier line names the act; this verse makes that same act the stated ground of the oath, binding promise to what Abraham did not keep back.
