King James wording
King James Version
And Sarah my master’s wife bare a son to my master when she was old: and unto him hath he given all that he hath.THE KEY
The birth and the inheritance are one movement: what is brought forth becomes the place where the father’s whole substance is held.
THE MEANING
Sarah (שָׂרָה, Sārāh, “princess”) bears a son when age seems to close the future, and everything is placed into his hands. The verse speaks now of possibility and inheritance arriving together: what comes forth can carry the future and receive the whole.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that what arrives late has no future to carry: what comes forth beyond expectation can receive the whole.
THE ROOT
נָתַן
natan
GROWS FROM
נתן
give, set, place
The same seed names the act of giving, a gift, and those who are given into service. Here, “given” carries the sense of placing the whole of Abraham’s substance into his son’s keeping.
ALSO GROWS
mattānāh: gift
מַתָּנָה
The gift is what has been placed into another’s hands; the root makes the transfer concrete.
nethînîm: the given ones; temple servants
נְתִינִים
The word names people by their being given into service, showing how the root can describe not only an act but a changed relation to what is entrusted.
וַתֵּלֶד
vattēled
GROWS FROM
ילד
bear, beget
“bore” in this verse is vattēled. English “bare” can sound like one completed event, but the root also gives the word for a child and for generations. The birth opens a line of what comes forth, and the verse immediately shows the son receiving the whole.
ALSO GROWS
yeled: child
יֶלֶד
The child is the one brought forth by the act named in the verse.
tôledôt: generations; what is born
תּוֹלְדוֹת
This branch carries birth forward into the generations that emerge from it.
THE PATTERN
The father’s fullness moves into the hands of the son, making inheritance a transfer of the whole.
And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into his hand.He who did not spare his own Son, but handed him over for us all, how will he not also favor us with all things along with him?THE THREAD
And Abraham gave all that he had to Isaac. The servant’s report here is confirmed in Genesis 25:5: Abraham gives Isaac all that he has. Both verses use נָתַן (natan, “give, set, place”), tying the spoken testimony to the enacted transfer.
