This verse in the King James

King James wording
And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac:

“Generations” and “begat” share the Hebrew root for bringing forth, so lineage is what one life brings forth.

A life does not begin in isolation: it receives what came before and becomes a point from which what follows can unfold. Isaac is named both as Abraham’s son and as the one Abraham brings forth, holding inheritance and emergence together.

“brought forth” in this verse is toledot. “Generations” (toledot) and “begat” (holid) carry the same root: what is born and the act of bringing it forth belong to one word-family. The verse holds the lineage and its continuation together instead of making them separate ideas.

הוֹלִיד

This is the same root in the verse’s second naming of Isaac: Abraham’s lineage is made concrete in the one he brings forth.
