This verse in the King James

King James wording
And after that came his brother out, and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them.

Jacob’s name carries the heel image of his first appearance inside it.

You see Jacob come into view with his hand on Esau’s heel; his name preserves that image. The root joins the heel with the one following at the heel, and the same word-shape can later describe supplanting. At this first moment, the verse holds both brothers together: one arrives while grasping the other’s path.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The assumption that a name is only a label detached from a life loosens here: this name carries the heel image on which it is bestowed.

יַעֲקֹב

Yaʿaqōv

GROWS FROM

עקב

ʿ-q-b

Heel; following at the heel, with the verb extending to supplant or overreach.

The verse places Jacob’s hand on a heel before giving him his name, joining the name to the scene through the root. The same root later gives the verb for supplanting, letting the heel image widen into a wordplay without making this birth scene itself an act of deception.

ALSO GROWS

ʿaqēv: Heel

עָקֵב

This is the body part held in the verse, anchoring the name to the birth scene.

ʿāqab: To follow at the heel; by extension, to supplant

עָקַב

The verb preserves the heel image in action; Genesis 27:36 uses it when Esau says Jacob has supplanted him.

Yaʿaqōv: Jacob; in this verse’s wordplay, the one who takes hold of a heel

יַעֲקֹב

The name echoes the heel in the scene, so the newborn’s first image is carried in his name.

Scripture gives names that carry the nature, action, or calling they mark.

And Adam called his wife's name, the living one, Eve; because she was the mother of all living.
Genesis 3:20 · SDVThe verse gives the reason for Eve’s name by joining it to her role as the mother of the living.
And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, fixing his gaze on him, said, You are Simon, son of John. You will be called Cephas, the rock.
John 1:42 · SDVSimon receives a name whose stated meaning is stone, making the name itself a revealing image.
And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.
Matthew 1:21 · SDVThe verse joins the name to the work of delivering his people, so the name carries what he does.
And he said, Is he not rightly named Jacob, the heel-grasper? For he has grasped my heel these two times. He took away my birthright, and look, now he has taken away my blessing. And he said, Have you not kept back a blessing for me?
Genesis 27:36 · SDV

The same root, ⁨עקב⁩ (ʿ-q-b: heel, following at the heel), links Jacob’s name and the word translated “supplanted.” The birth verse gives the heel image; here Esau makes its wordplay audible.
