King James wording
King James Version
And these are the days of the years of Abraham’s life which he lived, an hundred threescore and fifteen years.THE KEY
In Hebrew, Abraham’s “life” and the verb “he lived” share one root, so the verse measures life as lived days gathered into years.
THE MEANING
A life takes shape through days actually lived; years gather those days into a whole. Abraham’s 175 years are named as a completed span, with the same Hebrew root tying his “life” to the fact that he “lived.” The wording speaks to you now: the days you live are what your years contain.
THE ROOT
חַיֵּי
ḥayyê
GROWS FROM
חיה
ḥayah
to live; be alive
“life / lived” in this verse is ḥayyê. The verse holds “life” and the act of living in one root: Abraham’s life is the life he lived. The number gathers concrete days into a whole, rather than leaving life as an abstract span.
ALSO GROWS
ḥay: living; alive
חַי
This form shows the root’s sense of life as being alive, beneath the verse’s count of Abraham’s years.
ḥayyim: life; living
חַיִּים
This related form makes clear that the verse’s word for “life” belongs to the same living word family.
ḥāyâ: to live; be alive
חָיָה
This verb shares the root with “life”; the verse uses its form for “he lived,” joining life to the living of it.
THE PATTERN
A life takes shape as lived days gathered into a finite span.
And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my sojourning are a hundred and thirty years. Few and bad have the days of the years of my life been, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning. So show us how to count our days, that we may come into a heart of wisdom. You do not know what tomorrow holds. For what is your life? You are a mist, showing itself for a little while, and then made unseen.THE THREAD
And Jacob said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my sojourning are a hundred and thirty years. Few and bad have the days of the years of my life been, and they have not reached the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning. The same phrase, “days of the years of my life,” returns, and “life” again comes from חיה (ḥayah), the root behind “he lived.” Jacob’s words make the count personal: a life is gathered from the days that are lived.
