King James wording
King James Version
And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:THE KEY
The elder’s prized garments make the younger look like him, while Jacob’s name already carries the heel-following that becomes supplanting.
THE MEANING
Jacob wears the elder’s valued signs, so what the eye reads as Esau belongs to another body. The scene shows how a real garment can carry a false claim about the person wearing it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the assumption that recognizable clothes prove the wearer is the person they signify.
THE ROOT
וַתַּלְבֵּשׁ
vatilbash
GROWS FROM
לבש
l-b-sh
To clothe, wear, or be clothed.
“put them upon / clothed” in this verse is vatilbash. The decisive action is putting a covering onto another body. The same root speaks of wearing clothing and of clothing someone, so the garment becomes a way to make an identity visible on its wearer.
ALSO GROWS
lavash: To wear or be clothed.
לָבַשׁ
The wearer remains Jacob even as the clothing makes him appear to be Esau.
levush: Clothing or attire.
לְבוּשׁ
A garment can carry the visible signs by which others recognize a person.
הַחֲמֻדֹת
ha-chamudot
GROWS FROM
חמד
ḥ-m-d
To desire, delight in, or regard as precious.
“desired garments” in this verse is ha-chamudot. The Hebrew describes these as desirable or precious garments, not merely fine-looking ones. Jacob’s disguise borrows both Esau’s recognizable clothing and its value.
ALSO GROWS
chamad: To desire or covet.
חָמַד
The root spans what is prized and what is desired, sharpening the importance of the garments in the scene.
nechmadim: Desirable or precious; used of the LORD’s words in Psalm 19:10.
נֶחְמָדִים
As with the things called precious in the psalm, these garments carry value as well as appearance.
יַעֲקֹב
Ya'aqov
GROWS FROM
עקב
ʿ-q-b
Heel; by extension, to follow at the heel or supplant.
Jacob’s name holds the image of following at the heel, and the family story later makes its supplanting sense explicit. Here the younger wears the elder’s signs as Rebekah prepares the younger to take the elder’s place.
ALSO GROWS
aqev: The heel; the image behind the name in Genesis 25:26.
עָקֵב
The name’s heel image marks Jacob as the one following Esau at birth.
aqav: To supplant or take another’s place; the sense used in Genesis 27:36.
עָקַב
The act of dressing Jacob in Esau’s garments belongs to the taking of the elder’s place.
THE PATTERN
Clothing makes status, protection, or belonging visible through what a person wears.
And the LORD God made tunics of skin for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.I will exult greatly in the LORD; my living soul shall leap in my God; for he has clothed me in garments of deliverance, he has wrapped me in the robe of alignment, as a bridegroom dons a headdress, and as a bride binds on her jewels. For as many of you as have been immersed into the Anointed One have put on the Anointed One.THE THREAD
And the LORD God made tunics of skin for Adam and for his wife, and clothed them.Genesis 3:21 uses וַיַּלְבִּשֵׁם (vayalbishem, “and he clothed them”), from לבש (lavash, “to clothe”), for Adam and his wife. Here the same root describes Rebekah clothing Jacob, so the verb reveals a covering that can shield exposure or make a borrowed identity convincing.
