King James wording
King James Version
And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:THE KEY
A skin can make one person’s surface testify as another while leaving the person beneath it unchanged.
THE MEANING
A borrowed exterior can change what a body seems to be. Goat skins cover Jacob’s hands and neck, so their texture offers Isaac evidence of Esau while Jacob remains beneath them. The scene holds open the gap between what a surface communicates and what it conceals.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that a convincing surface makes the person beneath it identical with the appearance.
THE ROOT
חֶלְקַת
chelqat
GROWS FROM
חלק
ḥalaq
To be smooth or slippery; also to divide or apportion.
The word translated “smooth” comes from חלק, which also describes dividing or assigning a share. A portion of goat skin is laid over Jacob’s own skin, so touch reports what the covering supplies rather than what lies beneath.
ALSO GROWS
chalaq: Smooth, slippery.
חָלָק
This is the surface quality used to disguise Jacob’s hands and neck.
cheleq: A portion or share.
חֵלֶק
The shared root links smoothness with a divided portion: a piece of another animal’s skin covers Jacob’s own surface.
THE PATTERN
A convincing exterior can alter recognition while leaving the inward reality unchanged.
And Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him, and said, The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau. But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart.Woe to you, writers and separated ones, masked ones! For you are like plastered tombs, which indeed appear beautiful on the outside, but within are full of the bones of the dead and of all uncleanness.THE THREAD
And Jacob drew near to Isaac his father, and he felt him, and said, The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau. The disguise divides Isaac’s senses: touch says Esau, while the voice says Jacob. The covering can persuade one faculty, but another still registers what lies beneath it.
