King James wording
King James Version
And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death:THE KEY
You can know that your life is finite without knowing its final day before you meet it.
THE MEANING
You can recognize that your life has aged while its last day remains outside your knowing. Mortality is certain here; its timing is not.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that awareness of death makes its timing predictable dissolves: the end is real while its date remains hidden.
THE ROOT
יָדַעְתִּי
yādaʿtî
GROWS FROM
ידע
y-d-ʿ
to know, recognize, perceive
“do not know” in this verse is yādaʿtî. Here yada is knowing by encounter, not merely collecting information. The word brings Isaac’s limit into focus: he can perceive his age, but not the day that completes it.
ALSO GROWS
daʿat: knowledge
דַּעַת
This noun names knowledge itself, while the verse marks a fact that remains unavailable to present knowing.
mōdaʿ: acquaintance, kinsman
מוֹדָע
This branch can name someone known in relationship, showing that the root reaches beyond information to recognition, and still does not make the future day knowable.
THE PATTERN
A life can have real limits whose timing remains beyond human knowing.
Since his days are cut, and the number of his months is with you, you set his carved limits that he cannot pass over. For he does not know what will be, and as it will be, who will declare it to him?You do not know what tomorrow holds. For what is your life? You are a mist, showing itself for a little while, and then made unseen.THE THREAD
For humankind does not perceive its time. As fish are caught in an evil net, and as birds are caught in the snare, so humankind is caught in an evil time, when it falls upon them in a flash. The verb translated “knoweth” comes from ידע (y-d-ʿ; yādaʿ, to know or perceive), the same root as “I know not” here. Ecclesiastes widens this hidden limit to every person, then shows how suddenly that unknown time can arrive.
