King James wording
King James Version
And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.THE KEY
The voice names Jacob at the very moment the hands impersonate Esau.
THE MEANING
You meet signs that contradict each other: touch says Esau, while the voice says Jacob. The verse holds that split open, showing how a convincing surface can conceal the person a voice still makes recognizable.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that what your hands can verify is the whole truth of a person: here touch gives the wrong identity while the voice gives the right one.
THE ROOT
יַעֲקֹב
Yaʿaqov
GROWS FROM
ע־ק־ב
ʿ-q-b
Heel; take by the heel, and in Genesis’ wordplay, supplant.
Genesis itself links Yaʿaqov with ʿaqev, heel, and ʿaqav, to take by the heel or supplant. Here the name’s wordplay echoes in the grasping hands that wear another identity, while Jacob’s voice remains his own.
ALSO GROWS
ʿaqev: Heel.
עָקֵב
Genesis 25:26 narrates Jacob’s hand taking Esau’s heel, fastening the name to a grasping beginning.
ʿaqav: To take by the heel; in Genesis’ wordplay, to supplant.
עָקַב
In Genesis 27:36, Esau says Jacob has supplanted him; that name-play resonates here as Jacob’s hands take on Esau’s appearance.
וַיְמֻשֵּׁהוּ
waymushēhû
GROWS FROM
מ־שׁ־שׁ
m-sh-sh
To feel, grope, or search by touch.
“felt” in this verse is waymushēhû. This root reaches from testing by touch to groping without sight: contact can search for identity without guaranteeing it. Isaac’s hands give a confident verdict, but the verse makes that verdict less reliable than the voice.
ALSO GROWS
yemushēnî: Will feel me by touch.
יְמֻשֵּׁנִי
Jacob anticipates this very test in Genesis 27:12, using the same root for the touch that might expose him.
memashēsh: To grope or search by touch.
מְמַשֵּׁשׁ
In Deuteronomy 28:29 the same root describes a blind person groping in darkness, exposing how touch searches without necessarily discerning.
קוֹל
qōl
GROWS FROM
ק־ו־ל
q-w-l
Sound or voice.
The same Hebrew noun can name a human voice and thunderous sound, keeping voice within a wider field of audible signal. Isaac misreads what touch reports, yet the qōl is unmistakably Jacob’s.
ALSO GROWS
qōl: A voice or sound.
קוֹל
The repeated qōl in this verse makes Jacob’s voice the audible sign that persists through the disguise.
qōlōt: Sounds; rendered “thunder” in Exodus 9:23.
קוֹלֹת
The same word family can describe thunder, widening voice into a recognizable audible force beyond speech.
THE PATTERN
A person’s identity cannot be collapsed into one visible or tangible sign; a voice can carry what a surface conceals.
But the LORD said to Samuel, Do not look at his appearance or at the height of his stature, for I have pushed him away. The LORD does not see as the human sees. The human sees what is outside, but the LORD sees the heart. When he drives out his own sheep, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they perceive his voice.THE THREAD
Perhaps my father will feel me, and I will be before his eyes as one who misleads, and I will bring a curse upon myself and not a blessing.Jacob anticipates this touch test with the same Hebrew root מ־שׁ־שׁ (m-sh-sh), meaning to feel or grope by touch. Here Isaac performs that test, yet touch gives the wrong identity while Jacob’s voice breaks through.
