King James wording
King James Version
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison;THE KEY
Hebrew echoes the same root in “hunt” and “game,” holding pursuit and provision together in one linguistic movement.
THE MEANING
A request for food sends the body outward: the gear is lifted, the field entered, and hunted food is expected back. The repeated root joins the pursuit to its yield, letting care, appetite, and expectation meet in one concrete exchange.
THE ROOT
צוּדָה
tsudah
GROWS FROM
צוד
tsud
To hunt, capture, or take game.
“catch” in this verse is tsudah. The command to hunt and the requested game echo the same root: Hebrew holds the pursuit and what it yields within one word-family. The English separates the action from its result, while the Hebrew lets the act of hunting sound inside the provision itself.
ALSO GROWS
tsayid: Game; hunted food.
צַיִד
This is the word-family behind the game Isaac requests, linking the food to the act of pursuing it.
tsayyad: Hunter.
צַיָּד
The hunter is the one who pursues the צַיִד (tsayid), keeping the pursuer and the hunted thing linguistically connected.
THE PATTERN
The hunt-root binds pursuit to its captured yield, while showing that capture can provide food or threaten the pursued.
And the boys grew, and Esau was a man who knew the hunt, a man of the field; and Jacob was a whole man, settled in tents.Snatch yourself free, like the gazelle from the hand of the hunter, and like the bird from the hand of the snarer.Behold, I am sending for many fishers, declares the LORD, and they shall fish them. And afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and from every hill, and out of the clefts of the crags.THE THREAD
And the boys grew, and Esau was a man who knew the hunt, a man of the field; and Jacob was a whole man, settled in tents.Genesis names Esau a hunter and a man of the field; here Isaac’s instruction places the same hunt-root in both the action and the requested game. The word-family makes this request echo a quality already named in Esau.
