This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well’s mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well’s mouth in his place.

The stone does not create the water; rolling it away briefly opens the mouth of a source already there.

A source of nourishment can be present while its opening is covered. The flocks gather, the stone is rolled away, the sheep drink, and the stone is returned to its place. The scene holds access and covering together: the opening is cleared for the watering, then the boundary is restored.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the assumption that a covered source is an empty source: the water is already there beneath the stone.

וְגָלְלוּ

we-galelu

GROWS FROM

גלל

⁨גלל⁩ (galal): to roll, roll away.

“rolled the stone” in this verse is we-galelu. The verb describes movement that clears an opening, not the creation of what lies beyond it. The same root appears in words for a scroll and a wheel, keeping the sense of rolling present in forms English treats as unrelated.

ALSO GROWS

megillah: Scroll; a rolled writing.

מְגִלָּה

A scroll is something rolled up and opened to reveal its contents, echoing the stone moved from the well’s mouth.

galgal: Wheel; a rolling or turning thing.

גַּלְגַּל

The wheel carries the root’s rolling motion into an object, making the stone’s movement part of the same word-family.

וְנֶאֶסְפוּ

we-ne’esfu

GROWS FROM

אסף

⁨אסף⁩ (asaf): to gather, collect, bring together.

The gathering comes before the shared access to water: the flocks are brought together at the well. The root also forms words for a gathering or assembly, linking the animals’ collected presence with the idea of a gathered body.

ALSO GROWS

osef: Collection; gathering.

אֹסֶף

The noun preserves the act of bringing things together that begins the verse’s sequence.

asefah: Assembly; gathering.

אֲסֵפָה

This branch names a gathered group, illuminating how the flocks assemble around one source.

Life-giving water becomes available when its source is opened, uncovered, or made accessible.

And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel, daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob drew near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and gave drink to the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
Genesis 29:10 · SDVThe stone is rolled away from the well so the flock can drink, repeating the opening and watering sequence.
He brought out trickles from the cliff, and made waters run down like rivers.
Psalm 78:16 · SDVWater held within the rock becomes streams when it is brought out into reach.
But whoever drinks of the water I give never thirsts into the ages; the water I give becomes in him a spring of water leaping up into the life of the ages.
John 4:14 · SDVThe source of life-giving water is pictured as a well springing up within the one who receives it.
And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel, daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob drew near and rolled the stone from the mouth of the well, and gave drink to the flock of Laban his mother's brother.
Genesis 29:10 · SDV

Both verses use forms of ⁨גָּלַל⁩ (galal, “roll”): here the flocks roll the stone away as part of the watering sequence; in Genesis 29:10 Jacob rolls it away and waters Laban’s flock. The repeated root makes the later scene echo this verse’s opening of the well.
