This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

The “cool of the day” is the day’s ⁨רוּחַ⁩ (ruach, moving air; wind or breath), so the encounter unfolds in the same air Hebrew also calls breath.

God’s nearness is embodied and moving: the LORD God walks in the garden in the day’s breeze. When a person feels exposed, the reflex can be to hide from the presence that fills the very place where they stand.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Withdrawal cannot create true separation from God; the verse places the hiding within the garden where God’s presence moves.

רוּחַ

ruach

GROWS FROM

ר־ו־ח

r-w-ḥ

Moving air; wind or breath.

The phrase is literally the day’s ⁨רוּחַ⁩ (ruach, wind or moving air). “Cool” conveys the feel of the breeze, while the Hebrew word also carries the sense of breath, keeping the air itself in view.

ALSO GROWS

ruach: Wind or breeze.

רוּחַ

This is the day’s moving air through which the garden scene unfolds.

ruach: Breath.

רוּחַ

The same word used for the breeze also names breath, joining the air around the body with the air within it.

When God’s presence feels exposing, people hide or flee, even as that presence remains near.

And he said, I heard your voice in the garden, and I trembled, because I was bare; and I hid myself.
Genesis 3:10 · SDVAdam names the fear behind the hiding: the heard voice meets a sense of exposure.
But Jonah rose up to run to Tarshish from the face of the LORD. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish. He gave its price, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the face of the LORD.
Jonah 1:3 · SDVJonah’s flight turns the same impulse to hide into an attempt to escape the LORD’s presence.
Where shall I go from your breath? And where shall I flee from your face?
Psalm 139:7 · SDVThe question gives voice to the urge to flee while revealing that no place lies beyond God’s presence.
And Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
Genesis 5:24 · SDV

The verb for God’s walking in the garden comes from ⁨הָלַךְ⁩ (halakh, to walk or go), the same root used for Enoch’s walking with God. The shared verb holds two responses to nearness: hiding here and companionship there.
