King James wording
King James Version
And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the sixth son.THE KEY
The root behind “bare” also names the generations that follow, so one birth already contains the beginning of a continuing line.
THE MEANING
Every birth opens as one person’s arrival and as a continuation of a line already underway. Leah’s sixth son is both a distinct child and the next link in that family story.
THE ROOT
וַתֵּלֶד
vatteled
GROWS FROM
ילד
To bear, beget, bring forth
“bore” in this verse is vatteled. The verb for Leah’s act of bearing grows from ילד (yalad, to bear or beget), and the same root appears in תּוֹלְדוֹת (toledot, generations). English presents one birth; the Hebrew word family carries the movement from a child being born into the generations that continue.
ALSO GROWS
yeled: Child or young person
יֶלֶד
The child is the one brought forth: the root names both the act of bearing and the life that arrives.
toledot: Generations, lineage
תּוֹלְדוֹת
This branch shows how a birth extends beyond one arrival into the continuing family line.
THE PATTERN
A life formed in hiddenness becomes visible in birth, extending a line beyond its first moment.
And Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, the gotten one, and she said, I have gotten a man from the LORD.For a child is born to us, a son is given to us; the governance shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Father of the Ages, Prince of Wholeness.A woman, when she brings forth, has pain, because her hour has come. But when she has borne the child, she no longer remembers the pressure, for the joy that a human has been brought forth into the world.THE THREAD
And Leah said, God has endowed me with a good dowry. Now my husband will dwell with me, for I have borne him six sons. And she called his name Zebulun, dwelling. The next verse repeats ילד (yalad, to bear or beget) in Leah’s words, “I have born him six sons.” She connects the sixth birth with her hope that her husband will dwell with her, showing how the arrival reaches into the desire for belonging.
