King James wording
King James Version
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.THE KEY
Joseph’s name shares the root of Rachel’s “shall add,” so the child she has already carries the name of what she still longs for.
THE MEANING
What you have received can be real without making the desire still alive disappear. Joseph’s name holds both: a son already present and the hope that the LORD will add another. The verse lets receiving and longing coexist without canceling either.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that receiving what you longed for means you must no longer want anything more.
THE ROOT
יוֹסֵף
Yōsēf
GROWS FROM
יסף
y-s-p
to add, increase, or continue
“Joseph, may he add” in this verse is Yōsēf. In Hebrew, Yosef and “shall add” belong to the same יסף root. The name carries both the son already present and Rachel’s expectation of another.
ALSO GROWS
yāsaph: to add, increase, or continue
יָסַף
This verb is the root beneath the name and Rachel’s “shall add,” making her words echo in the child’s name.
tōsefet: addition; supplement
תּוֹסֶפֶת
This noun carries the same root in the idea of something added to what is already present.
THE PATTERN
A scriptural name can compress a living claim into the person who bears it.
And the child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, the one drawn out, and she said, Because from the waters I drew him out.And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.THE THREAD
The LORD adds upon you, upon you and upon your children.Psalm 115:14 uses יֹסֵף (yōsēp, “may he add” or “increase”), from the same יסף root as Joseph and Rachel’s “shall add.” The root carries a name and an expanding promise, reaching beyond the present person to their children.
