King James wording
King James Version
And he set three days’ journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Laban’s flocks.THE KEY
The separation does not take the work with it: Jacob is left tending what Laban leaves behind.
THE MEANING
A three-day distance opens between Laban and Jacob, yet Jacob is still tending the flock that remains. Distance and continuing responsibility occupy the same scene: what is left behind still requires care.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Separation automatically means release from another person’s claim; here, the distance is set while Jacob remains responsible for Laban’s flock.
THE ROOT
הַנּוֹתָרֹת
hanotarot
GROWS FROM
יתר
y-t-r
to remain over, be left, or be left as a remainder
“The rest” here is not a pause; it is what remains after a division. The flock left behind is still a real portion, and Jacob’s work continues with it.
ALSO GROWS
yeter: remainder, surplus
יֶתֶר
This branch names what is left over after a portion is taken, making the flock’s “rest” a concrete remainder.
hotir: to leave over, cause to remain
הוֹתִיר
This causative branch echoes the act of leaving something behind: Jacob tends the flock that remains after Laban’s separation.
THE PATTERN
What remains after a division still has a place and consequences of its own.
And what remains of the gift is Aaron's and his sons'; it is most set apart of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.So also now, in this present season, there is a remnant left behind, picked out by favor.THE THREAD
They will cover the eye of the land, so that no one can see the land. They will eat what has escaped, the remnant that was left to you from the hail, and they will eat every tree that sprouts for you out of the field.“Residue” here is יֶתֶר (yeter), from the same יתר root as the flock called “the rest” in Genesis. Exodus shows that what remains can still be exposed to what comes next; Genesis shows that the remainder still carries the work of tending.
