This verse in the King James

King James wording
And thou saidst, I will surely do thee good, and make thy seed as the sand of the sea, which cannot be numbered for multitude.

The Hebrew behind “numbered” also means “told,” so the promise exceeds both a tally and a telling.

The verse places the reader inside a promise whose goodness comes with emphatic force: “I will surely do thee good.” Its image of seed outruns every human count, making abundance larger than what can presently be measured.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a future is only as large as what can be measured now.

יִסָּפֵר

yissāfēr

GROWS FROM

ספר

s-p-r

Count, enumerate, recount, or tell.

“counted” in this verse is yissāfēr. Because ⁨ספר⁩ can mean count or recount, an uncountable multitude also slips beyond a complete telling. Genesis 15:5 uses this same root when Abraham is told to “tell” the stars and then “number” them, joining counting and telling in one Hebrew thread.

ALSO GROWS

sāfar: To count, number, or enumerate.

סָפַר

This is the basic action behind “cannot be numbered”; the multitude exceeds the act of counting it.

sippēr: To recount, relate, or tell.

סִפֵּר

The same root reaches from measuring a multitude to narrating it; the promise exceeds a complete account too.

mispar: A number or count.

מִסְפָּר

This noun carries the root’s counting action as a quantity, the very measure the verse says fails.

A promised future is pictured as seed whose increase outruns human counting.

And he led him outside, and said, Look up toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said to him, So will your seed be.
Genesis 15:5 · SDVThe seed’s promised abundance is compared to stars that cannot be counted.
As the host of the heavens cannot be counted, nor the sand of the sea measured, so will I multiply the seed of David my servant, and the Levites who attend me.
Jeremiah 33:22 · SDVThe promise again uses unnumbered stars and immeasurable sand to picture multiplied seed.
Therefore from one, and that one already deadened, there were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand by the lip of the sea, uncounted.
Hebrews 11:12 · SDVOne life gives rise to a multitude the verse describes as innumerable, in both stars and sand.
And he led him outside, and said, Look up toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said to him, So will your seed be.
Genesis 15:5 · SDV

Genesis 15:5 uses the same Hebrew root, ⁨ספר⁩, for “tell” and “number.” The connection makes the promise exceed both a tally and a full telling.
