King James wording
King James Version
And he lodged there that same night; and took of that which came to his hand a present for Esau his brother;THE KEY
The gift is made from what has already come into Jacob’s hand, turning what arrives into a gesture toward his brother.
THE MEANING
You enter difficult encounters carrying what has already reached your hands; what arrived as provision can become a gesture that moves ahead of you. The verse places the gift before the face-to-face meeting without saying that the gift itself settles the distance between brothers.
THE ROOT
הַבָּא
habba
GROWS FROM
בוא
bo
To come, enter, or arrive.
The phrase means Jacob takes from what came into his hand. The root connects arrival with what becomes available, so the gift begins with what has reached him rather than something he must first create.
ALSO GROWS
bo: To come, enter, or arrive.
בּוֹא
This verb is the seed of “came”; it gives the phrase its sense of something arriving within reach.
tevu’ah: Produce, yield, or income.
תְּבוּאָה
This related noun names what comes in as a yield, echoing the movement from received provision to gift.
mavo: Entrance or approach.
מָבוֹא
This branch carries coming into a place; here, what has come into Jacob’s hand becomes part of his approach to Esau.
THE PATTERN
A gift becomes part of an encounter, carrying relational meaning beyond its material value.
And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this. Take from the best of the land in your vessels, and carry down to the man a gift, a little balm, a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds.A man's giving widens room for him, and leads him before great men.So if you bring your gift toward the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you;THE THREAD
And their father Israel said to them, If it must be so now, then do this. Take from the best of the land in your vessels, and carry down to the man a gift, a little balm, a little honey, spices, and myrrh, nuts, and almonds. Both verses call Jacob’s gift מִנְחָה (minḥāh, present), making this a direct word-level link. Here the gift is drawn from what has come into his hand; in Genesis 43:11 he chooses the land’s best produce, showing the same gift-word attached to provision already available.
