This verse in the King James

King James wording
So went the present over before him: and himself lodged that night in the company.

The gift crosses the distance first, while the one who sends it still spends the night before the meeting.

A gift can cross ahead into an encounter while you remain in the night before it. Preparation and waiting happen together: what moves ahead does not erase the distance still to be crossed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that an encounter cannot be prepared until you enter it yourself: something can cross ahead while you remain where you are.

וַתַּעֲבֹר

vattaʿavor

GROWS FROM

עבר

to cross over, pass across, or pass through

“crossed over” in this verse is vattaʿavor. ⁨עבר⁩ means more than being in front: the gift crosses into the space ahead of him. In ⁨מַעֲבָר⁩ (maʿavar), a passage or crossing, and ⁨עֲבֵרָה⁩ (ʿaverah), a transgression or crossing of a boundary, the same root carries movement across a threshold; here that movement happens before he remains for the night.

ALSO GROWS

maʿavar: passage, crossing

מַעֲבָר

The gift’s motion is a passage into the space of encounter before he reaches it himself.

ʿaverah: transgression; crossing a boundary

עֲבֵרָה

This branch makes the root’s boundary-crossing image visible; here the gift crosses ahead toward an encounter.

The space of a coming encounter is prepared by what goes ahead before the one who will enter it.

Look, I send a messenger before you to guard you in the way and to bring you to the place I have established.
Exodus 23:20 · SDVWhat is sent ahead prepares the way and the place before the traveler arrives.
Look, I am sending my messenger, and he will clear the way before me. And suddenly the Lord whom you seek will come to his temple, the messenger of the covenant whom you delight in. Look, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 3:1 · SDVThe messenger goes ahead to prepare a way for the coming encounter.
After these things the Lord showed forth seventy others also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, where he himself was about to come.
Luke 10:1 · SDVThose sent ahead enter the places where the one who sends them will later come.
And he crossed over before them and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he drew near to his brother.
Genesis 33:3 · SDV

The same crossing root returns: the gift passes ahead in this verse, then he passes ahead of those with him and bows as he comes near his brother. The repeated root carries the motion from preparation toward direct encounter.
