King James wording
King James Version
And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.THE KEY
The death belongs to the holder; the reign can continue through a succession beyond him.
THE MEANING
A life can end while a place of authority remains open to another holder. Death closes one person’s tenure; the position can continue through succession.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The false belief is that authority must end when its holder dies. The verse separates the person from the reign that passes to another.
THE ROOT
וַיִּמְלֹךְ
wayyimlōḵ
GROWS FROM
מלך
m-l-k
to reign or rule as king
English can make “reigned” sound like an action that belongs only to one person. The מלך root connects that rule with both the king who holds it and the kingship or realm it describes: the holder dies, while succession carries the reign onward.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: king
מֶלֶךְ
The same root names the person who holds the rule, showing how closely the ruler and the act of reigning are joined.
malkhut: kingship, kingdom
מַלְכוּת
This branch names the rule or realm itself, making visible the distinction between a reign and the person who holds it.
THE PATTERN
A place of authority can outlast its holder and pass to another.
And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel. Then Solomon settled upon the throne of David his father, and his kingdom was set very firm. For it is written in the book of Psalms, "Let his enclosure become empty, and let no one settle in it," and, "Let another take up his watch."THE THREAD
And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel. Here, “kings” and “reigned” share the מלך (m-l-k, “rule as king”) root with “reigned” in this verse. Husham’s accession is one link in the line of rulers, where the seat continues as each holder gives way.
