King James wording
King James Version
And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;THE KEY
The same Hebrew root behind both births also forms “generations,” so each child is presented as the beginning of a continuing line.
THE MEANING
Your life enters the world through relationships and belongs to a story larger than the moment of birth. Here the repeated verb joins Adah’s and Bashemath’s births, while אֱלִיפָז (Eliphaz, “my God is fine gold”) and רְעוּאֵל (Reuel, “friend of God”) hold distinct meanings within a shared family line.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a person is self-originating gives way here: both births are placed in relation to a mother and father, and each child enters a line.
THE ROOT
וַתֵּלֶד
vattēled
GROWS FROM
ילד
y-l-d
To bear, bring forth, or beget.
“bore” in this verse is vattēled. Both mothers’ verbs come from the same root, binding their births together. That root also forms תּוֹלְדוֹת (toledot, “generations”), so the act of bringing forth already contains the beginning of a lineage.
ALSO GROWS
yeled: Child; one brought forth.
יֶלֶד
The root names both the act of bearing and the child who emerges from it.
toledot: Generations; descendants or an account of origins.
תּוֹלְדוֹת
This branch shows how a birth becomes part of a continuing family line.
THE PATTERN
A name can preserve the nature or story of the person it marks.
And the first came out red, all over, like a cloak of hair; and they called his name Esau. And after that his brother came out, and his hand gripped Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob, the heel-grasper; and Isaac was sixty years old when she bore them. And she will bring forth a son, and you will call his name Jesus, the LORD's deliverance, for he will deliver his people from their missing.THE THREAD
And the women who were her neighbors called out a name for him, saying, A son is born to Naomi, and they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.“Born” translates a form of ילד (yalad), the same root behind both “bare” verbs here. Ruth’s verse carries Obed forward through Jesse to David, making the generations already held inside this birth root visible.
