King James wording
King James Version
And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.THE KEY
The Hebrew casts rescue as pulling Joseph out of the brothers’ grasp, so the threat is interrupted even before it is resolved.
THE MEANING
When harm gathers around you, another voice can still interrupt the movement from threat to action. Reuben pulls Joseph out of the brothers’ immediate reach, though the danger remains unfinished.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that a group’s violent decision makes the outcome inevitable is undone here: one person’s intervention can alter what happens next.
THE ROOT
וַיַּצִּלֵהוּ
wayyaṣṣilēhû
GROWS FROM
נצל
To snatch away, rescue, or strip off.
“snatched” in this verse is wayyaṣṣilēhû. The verb here is a causative form of נצל (nāṣal, “snatch away; rescue”): Reuben removes Joseph from their immediate reach. Elsewhere this same root can describe stripping spoils away, so its shared force is removal; rescue is what that removal becomes when it draws a life out of danger.
ALSO GROWS
haṣṣîlû: Rescue them; “rid them out” (Psalm 82:4).
הַצִּילוּ
The same root describes pulling the vulnerable out of the wicked person’s hand, echoing Reuben’s intervention.
wayenatselu: They stripped or plundered (Exodus 12:36).
וַיְנַצְּלוּ
The root can describe taking something out of another’s possession; here, that forceful removal is directed toward rescuing a life.
THE PATTERN
Intervention can pull a life out of violence’s immediate reach before the danger itself has passed.
If you hold back from snatching away those seized toward death, and those bent toward the slaughter. And when a great standing apart arose, the commander of a thousand, fearing that Paul would be torn apart by them, ordered the soldiers to go down and snatch him from their midst, and to bring him into the barracks.THE THREAD
Snatch away the low and the needy; from the hand of the wicked, pluck them out.Psalm 82:4 uses הַצִּילוּ (haṣṣîlû, “rescue them”) from the same נצל (nāṣal, “snatch away; rescue”) root, placing the vulnerable outside “the hand of the wicked.” The shared root makes Genesis’s rescue concrete: a life is removed from the reach of those who would harm it.
