King James wording
King James Version
Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, and let not our hand be upon him; for he is our brother and our flesh. And his brethren were content.THE KEY
The brothers call Joseph “our flesh” as they sell him, and the Hebrew says their “contentment” is their act of listening to Judah.
THE MEANING
The verse holds a bond and a betrayal together: Joseph is named as their brother and their flesh even as they price and transfer him. “Let not our hand be upon him” limits one form of violence; selling him carries the harm forward. Their recognition of kinship does not stop the transaction.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that avoiding the worst harm makes a chosen lesser harm harmless: sparing Joseph from direct killing does not make selling him harmless.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ
vayyishme'u
GROWS FROM
שמע
Hear, listen, heed; hearing that moves into response.
“heard and responded” in this verse is vayyishme'u. The Hebrew says the brothers heard or heeded Judah, not simply that they felt content. The same root appears in Ishmael’s name, יִשְׁמָעֵאל (Yishma’el, “God hears”), echoed in the name of the people to whom Joseph is sold, a sound connection English obscures.
ALSO GROWS
shema: Hear and respond
שְׁמַע
The root joins hearing to response, as the brothers take up Judah’s proposal.
Yishma'el: God hears
יִשְׁמָעֵאל
The Ishmaelites’ name carries the same hearing root within the destination of Joseph’s sale.
shomea: One who hears; a listener
שֹׁמֵעַ
This form makes the brothers’ role as listeners explicit: they receive Judah’s words and act on them.
מָכַר
makhar
GROWS FROM
מכר
Sell; transfer for a price.
“sell” in this verse is makhar. The sale is not an incidental detail: the verb makes Joseph the object of an exchange. Beside “our brother and our flesh,” it exposes how naming kinship can coexist with treating a person as merchandise.
ALSO GROWS
mimkar: A sale; something sold
מִמְכָּר
The related noun gives the transaction a form, while Joseph remains the person being transferred.
mokher: Seller
מוֹכֵר
This form names the person carrying out the exchange, making the brothers’ choice active rather than abstract.
בְּשָׂרֵנוּ
besarenu
GROWS FROM
בשר
Flesh; bodily kinship.
“Our flesh” names shared, vulnerable bodily kinship. The phrase acknowledges Joseph as one of them even as the sale disregards that bond.
ALSO GROWS
basar: Flesh
בָּשָׂר
The concrete bodily sense keeps the brothers’ claim grounded in shared human vulnerability.
basar echad: One flesh
בָּשָׂר אֶחָד
This biblical phrase uses the same word to name a bond of bodily kinship, illuminating the weight of “our flesh” here.
THE PATTERN
A relationship can be named even as a person is turned into the price of an exchange.
And Jacob said, Swear to me today. And Esau swore to him, and he sold his firstborn right to Jacob. If a man is found stealing a living soul from among his brothers, from the children of Israel, and seizes him and sells him, then that thief dies, and you burn out the evil from your midst. And said to them, What will you give me, and I will hand him over to you? And they set out for him thirty pieces of silver.THE THREAD
If a man is found stealing a living soul from among his brothers, from the children of Israel, and seizes him and sells him, then that thief dies, and you burn out the evil from your midst. The same root מָכַר (makhar, “sell”) appears in Deuteronomy’s prohibition against selling a brother. That connection makes the limit in Genesis plain: withholding one violence does not make the sale of Joseph harmless.
