King James wording
King James Version
For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.THE KEY
Hebrew makes the act of binding and the sheaf itself echo one root: what is gathered into a bundle rises while the bundles around it bow.
THE MEANING
You see a gathered sheaf rise into view while the surrounding sheaves turn and bow. The verse makes recognition bodily: authority takes shape in posture before anyone argues for it.
THE ROOT
וַתִּשְׁתַּחֲוֶיןָ
vatishṭaḥăwēnā
GROWS FROM
שחה
shachah
to bow low, to prostrate oneself
“bowed down” in this verse is vatishṭaḥăwēnā. The Hebrew verb makes the response a visible lowering of the body. The same root appears when Joseph’s brothers bow before him; the dream’s defining action carries into that scene.
ALSO GROWS
shachah: to bow low, to prostrate oneself
שָׁחָה
This is the root action beneath the bowing in the dream.
hishtachavah: to bow oneself down
הִשְׁתַּחֲוָה
This form makes the body the agent of the bowing.
vayishtachavu: and they bowed down
וַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּ
Genesis 42:6 uses this form as Joseph’s brothers bow before him.
מְאַלְּמִים
me’allemim
GROWS FROM
אלם
’alam
to bind or gather into sheaves
“binding sheaves” in this verse is me’allemim. The verb for binding and the noun for sheaf share the same Hebrew root. The central image is a bundle made from many stalks, gathered into one form that rises as a whole.
ALSO GROWS
alummah: a sheaf, a bound bundle of grain
אֲלֻמָּה
The noun names the bundle formed by the binding action.
alumim: sheaves, bundles of grain
אֲלֻמִּים
The plural names the surrounding bundles that circle Joseph’s sheaf.
THE PATTERN
A hidden authority becomes visible through the posture of those who bow before it.
And he dreamed yet another dream, and told it to his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream, and behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me.And Joseph was the ruler over the land, and he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him, their faces to the ground. That at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of things in heaven, and things on the earth, and things under the earth.THE THREAD
And Joseph was the ruler over the land, and he was the one who sold grain to all the people of the land. Joseph's brothers came and bowed down before him, their faces to the ground. The Hebrew word translated “bowed down” comes from the same root as the sheaves’ “made obeisance.” The dream’s image and the brothers’ posture are joined by the same act: bowing.
