This verse in the King James

King James wording
And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

The brothers hear both the crown of kingship and the reach of rule in Joseph’s dreams.

The dreams register to the brothers as a future in which Joseph stands above them, and their question names both rank and rule. Their fear does not remain a question: it becomes deeper hatred, directed at the dreams and at his words. The passage shows how another person’s imagined rise can become painful before it is realized.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that hostility only begins after someone has taken power is undone here: the dreams and words alone are enough to intensify it.

תִּמְשֹׁל

timshol

GROWS FROM

משל

mashal

to rule or exercise authority

The brothers’ second question asks whether Joseph’s rule will extend over them. This root names exercised authority, giving their fear a reach beyond the status of being king.

ALSO GROWS

moshel: ruler, governor

מֹשֵׁל

Psalm 22:28 uses this form for the one who governs among the nations, showing the same root can name authority without making it an insult.

memshalah: rule, dominion, government

מֶמְשָׁלָה

This branch makes explicit the scope of authority the brothers fear Joseph will hold over them.

תִּמְלֹךְ

timlokh

GROWS FROM

מלך

malakh

to be king or reign

“reign” in this verse is timlokh. The verse places a royal verb beside a different verb for exercising rule: the brothers hear both kingship and its practical reach. The two questions expose why the dreams trouble them, they imply a change in both rank and authority.

ALSO GROWS

melekh: king

מֶלֶךְ

This branch makes the royal status inside “reign” visible.

malkhut: kingdom, kingship

מַלְכוּת

This branch carries the idea of kingship from a person to the realm or rule associated with that position.

When another person’s favor or rise feels like a threat, comparison hardens into hostility.

But to Cain and to his offering he did not gaze. And it burned exceedingly in Cain, and his face fell.
Genesis 4:5 · SDVCain’s brother receives regard, and comparison turns into anger.
And Saul burned exceedingly, and this word was evil in his eyes, and he said, They have given David ten thousands, and to me they have given only thousands. What more can he have but the kingdom?
1 Samuel 18:8 · SDVSaul hears David’s greater praise as a threat to his own standing, and his anger rises.
For he knew that the chief priests had handed him over out of envy.
Mark 15:10 · SDVEnvy moves the chief priests to hand Jesus over.
For the governance is the LORD's, and he rules among the nations.
Psalm 22:28 · SDV

Genesis uses the same root for the brothers’ feared act of ruling; Psalm 22:28 uses its ruler-form for the one who governs among the nations. The shared root opens a contrast between authority imagined as domination and authority named as governance under God.
