King James wording
King James Version
Then said Judah to Tamar his daughter in law, Remain a widow at thy father’s house, till Shelah my son be grown: for he said, Lest peradventure he die also, as his brethren did. And Tamar went and dwelt in her father’s house.THE KEY
Judah tells Tamar to “remain,” and the next clause says she “dwelt”: the same Hebrew root turns a temporary instruction into her actual place.
THE MEANING
Your future can be placed inside someone else’s fear. Judah tells Tamar to remain a widow until Shelah grows, then she dwells at her father’s house; the verse makes the waiting a lived place, while his words reveal the fear governing it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A delay costs nothing when the reason for it sounds protective.
THE ROOT
שְׁבִי
shevi
GROWS FROM
ישב
y-sh-b
Sit, dwell, remain; take up a place.
“Sit as a widow” in this verse is shevi. The KJV renders the same root first as Judah’s command, “remain,” then as Tamar’s action, “dwelt.” The word joining them makes the waiting material: the instruction becomes a place in which she lives.
ALSO GROWS
yashav: To sit, dwell, remain.
יָשַׁב
This is the base verb behind Judah’s imperative “remain” and Tamar’s later “dwelt.”
moshav: Dwelling place, settlement.
מוֹשָׁב
This noun shows how the root can name a habitation itself, echoing how Tamar’s instructed pause becomes her location.
יְהוּדָה
Yehudah
GROWS FROM
ידה
y-d-h
Acknowledge, give thanks, praise.
“Judah” in this verse is Yehudah. Yehudah carries praise and acknowledgment in his name; here he gives the fear beneath his instruction a voice: “Lest peradventure he die also.” The verse holds both the nature named and the force speaking through him.
ALSO GROWS
yadah: To praise, give thanks, acknowledge.
יָדָה
This verb belongs to the word-family that gives Judah his name.
todah: Thanksgiving, thanks.
תּוֹדָה
This related word keeps the language of acknowledgment and gratitude audible in Judah’s name.
THE PATTERN
When someone with power sets a future condition, the waiting person’s lived reality shows whether the promised care arrives.
And she took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the opening of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnath. For she saw that Shelah grew up, and she had not been given to him as wife.Do not hold back good from its owners, when your hand has the reach to do it.Look, the wages of the workers who mowed your fields, stripped away by your fraud, cry out, and the cries of those who reaped have gone into the ears of the LORD of hosts.THE THREAD
And she took off the garments of her widowhood, and covered herself with a veil, and wrapped herself, and sat in the opening of Enaim, which is on the road to Timnath. For she saw that Shelah grew up, and she had not been given to him as wife. The Hebrew word translated “sat” is וַתֵּשֶׁב (vatteshev), from ישב, the same root behind “dwelt” in this verse. Here Shelah has grown, yet Tamar is still not given to him, so the repeated root carries her from waiting in her father’s house to waiting by the road.
