King James wording
King James Version
And Judah sent the kid by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman’s hand: but he found her not.THE KEY
The verse makes an agreement a chain of custody: the payment travels through one hand, while the pledge remains beyond reach in another.
THE MEANING
You see an agreement made tangible: Judah sends a kid through his trusted friend to receive the pledge from the woman’s hand. The woman cannot be found, so the pledge, and the obligation it carries, remains out of reach. The exchange is still open even though the promised animal is already sent.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Sending your side of a bargain does not automatically settle the whole exchange; the pledge can still be outstanding.
THE ROOT
עֵרָבוֹן
ʿērāḇōn
GROWS FROM
ערב
ʿ-r-b
To stand surety, pledge oneself, or provide security.
A pledge is more than an object: it makes an obligation tangible and holds it open until the exchange is complete. Here, that obligation is meant to return through another person’s hand, but remains out of reach.
ALSO GROWS
ʿārav: To stand surety or guarantee an obligation.
עָרַב
This is the action beneath the pledged object: someone takes responsibility for an agreement that is not yet complete.
ʿarevut: Suretyship or guarantee.
עֲרֵבוּת
This branch makes clear that a pledge carries a relationship of responsibility, not merely the value of the object itself.
וַיִּשְׁלַח
wayyišlaḥ
GROWS FROM
שלח
š-l-ḥ
To send forth, send away, or release.
“sent” in this verse is wayyišlaḥ. The root שָׁלַח (shalach, send forth or release) gives the scene its motion: Judah sends the kid out through a trusted intermediary. Yet sending the payment does not release the pledge from the woman’s hand or finish the exchange.
ALSO GROWS
shaliach: A sent agent or messenger.
שָׁלִיחַ
Judah’s friend acts on his behalf, carrying the exchange between the two parties.
shilluach: A sending forth or dismissal.
שִׁלּוּחַ
This branch echoes the kid’s movement out from Judah, while the unresolved pledge shows that sending something forth does not complete every obligation.
THE PATTERN
A pledge makes an obligation tangible while its fulfillment remains outstanding.
And he said, I will send you a young goat from the flock. And she said, Will you give me a pledge until you send it?My son, if you have entangled yourself for your companion, if you have struck your palms with a stranger.Who has also pressed his seal upon us, and has given the pledge of the breath in our hearts.THE THREAD
Who has also pressed his seal upon us, and has given the pledge of the breath in our hearts. The Greek ἀρραβών (arrabōn, pledge or earnest) is a Semitic loanword related to Hebrew עֵרָבוֹן (ʿērāḇōn, pledge), the word for Judah’s collateral. Here the same pledge-language names a present guarantee of what is still to come.
