This verse in the King James

King James wording
And she laid up his garment by her, until his lord came home.

The Hebrew word for “garment” echoes the consonants of “betray,” and here the garment is kept as betrayal takes shape.

Joseph’s garment stays beside her while she waits for her husband to come home. The cloth is tangible, but it cannot by itself tell what happened; whoever holds it can shape the story attached to it.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A real object does not prove the story told about it.

בִּגְדוֹ

bigdô

GROWS FROM

בגד

The consonants ⁨בגד⁩ appear in ⁨בֶּגֶד⁩, “garment,” and ⁨בָּגַד⁩, “to deal treacherously”; their historical relationship is uncertain, but the consonant echo is striking here.

The garment stays in the hands of the person shaping the accusation. Its Hebrew consonants also echo treachery, bringing clothing and betrayal into the same line of sight without proving one word derives from the other.

ALSO GROWS

beged: Garment, clothing

בֶּגֶד

This is the noun used for Joseph’s garment, the object she keeps beside her.

bāgad: To deal treacherously, betray

בָּגַד

The shared consonants echo the betrayal unfolding around the garment.

וַתַּנַּח

vattenaḥ

GROWS FROM

נוח

To rest, settle, or bring to rest.

“laid” in this verse is vattenaḥ. The verb describes her setting the garment down beside her and leaving it there. The object is made to remain in place until her husband arrives, ready to enter the account she will give.

ALSO GROWS

menuchah: Rest, resting place

מְנוּחָה

It carries the same root sense of coming to rest or being settled.

Noach: Noah; a name associated with rest

נֹחַ

The name echoes the root’s sense of rest, showing another branch of ⁨נוח⁩.

A garment’s meaning can be staged by whoever controls it; the cloth alone cannot verify the story placed on it.

And Rebekah took the desired garments of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son.
Genesis 27:15 · SDVRebekah uses Esau’s clothing to help present Jacob as someone he is not.
And they sent the coat of many colors, and they brought it to their father, and said, This we have found. Perceive now whether it is your son's coat or not.
Genesis 37:32 · SDVJoseph’s brothers present his coat as tangible evidence while inviting Jacob to reach a false conclusion.
They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him.
Matthew 27:28 · SDVThe soldiers use clothing to stage a royal identity in mockery.
They have dealt treacherously against the LORD, for they have borne children of strangers; now a new moon will devour them with their portions.
Hosea 5:7 · SDV

Hosea uses the same consonants in ⁨בָּגַד⁩ (bāgad), “to deal treacherously.” In Genesis the ⁨בֶּגֶד⁩ (beged), “garment,” is kept as betrayal takes shape; Hosea speaks the betrayal directly. The consonant echo draws the covering and the breach of trust together.
