This verse in the King James

King James wording
The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper.

The work can advance within confinement because the LORD’s presence is not confined by the keeper’s oversight.

Even where your life is tightly constrained, the LORD remains present and the work in your hands can move forward. Human oversight may loosen without cutting off that source of movement; flourishing here happens inside confinement, not only after it ends.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that life cannot flourish until the conditions holding it down have changed.

מַצְלִיחַ

matsliach

GROWS FROM

צלח

To advance or succeed; in the causative form, to make something advance.

“break through” in this verse is matsliach. The Hebrew casts prosperity as forward movement and makes the LORD the one causing that movement. The work advances while the prison remains, so flourishing does not mean the confinement has already disappeared.

ALSO GROWS

tsalach: To advance, succeed, prosper.

צָלַח

This base verb retains the sense of forward movement: the work is making headway even in a constrained place.

hitsliach: To make succeed, cause to prosper.

הִצְלִיחַ

This causative form puts the action on the one enabling the advance, matching the verse’s attribution of Joseph’s prosperity to the LORD.

Flourishing is forward movement and fruitfulness, not merely a change in outward circumstances.

And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a man who broke through; and he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
Genesis 39:2 · SDVThe LORD is with Joseph, and the text calls him prosperous while he remains in an Egyptian household, holding presence and forward movement together.
And he becomes like a tree planted by the channels of the waters, that gives its fruit in its season; its leaf does not wither; whatever he does, he breaks through.
Psalm 1:3 · SDVThe planted tree bears fruit and does not wither; prospering appears as sustained fruitfulness through the seasons.
Beloved, concerning all things I pray that your way goes well and that you are whole, just as your living soul goes well.
3 John 1:2 · SDVProspering and bodily health are named alongside the soul’s flourishing, widening the pattern to the whole person.
And the man, gazing at her, held still, to know whether the LORD had made his road break through or not.
Genesis 24:21 · SDV

The same root ⁨צלח⁩ appears as the servant wonders whether the LORD has made his journey prosper. Here too, forward movement is attributed to the LORD while a human observer pauses before seeing the outcome.
