King James wording
King James Version
But think on me when it shall be well with thee, and shew kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:THE KEY
The verse links two forms of remembering: being held in mind and being spoken before the power that can open the door.
THE MEANING
You need more than a kind thought when you remain confined; your name must reach someone who can change your circumstances. Here, remembrance, faithful love, and being brought out are joined in one direct appeal. The house is the place you are still in, and coming out is the change you seek.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being remembered privately is enough when you remain confined: remembrance that never becomes mention or help leaves the need untouched.
THE ROOT
זְכַרְתַּנִי
zakartani
GROWS FROM
זכר
z-k-r
Remember, recall, bring to mind; in the causative form, cause to remember or mention.
English can make “think on me” and “make mention of me” sound like separate acts, but Hebrew repeats זכר (z-k-r): remember me, then cause me to be remembered before Pharaoh. The verse turns inward remembrance into speech that can change the speaker’s confinement.
ALSO GROWS
zikkaron: Memorial, remembrance.
זִכָּרוֹן
A memorial keeps something in mind and makes it present; this verse asks for remembrance to become present in someone’s actions.
hizkir: Mention, remind, cause to remember.
הִזְכִּיר
This causative form shares the root with “think on me” and shows remembrance moving from private thought into spoken mention.
חֶסֶד
ḥesed
GROWS FROM
חסד
ḥ-s-d
Faithful love, kindness, loyalty expressed in relationship.
“do faithful love with me” in this verse is ḥesed. The kindness requested is חֶסֶד (ḥesed, faithful love): care that takes shape in what is done for another. It joins remembrance to practical help, making the appeal more than a request for courtesy.
ALSO GROWS
ḥasid: A faithful or devoted person.
חָסִיד
This related word describes a person in terms of faithful devotion, echoing the relational care Joseph asks to receive.
ḥasidim: Faithful or devoted ones.
חֲסִידִים
The plural carries the same quality into a community; here, that quality is requested as an act toward one person.
וְהוֹצֵאתַנִי
vehotzetani
GROWS FROM
יצא
y-ts-ʾ
Go out, come out, emerge; in the causative form, bring out.
“bring me out” in this verse is vehotzetani. The request uses the causative form of יצא (yatsa, go out): Joseph asks to be brought out, not simply to find his own way out. The change is concrete, a person is moved from inside the house to outside it.
ALSO GROWS
yatsa: Go out, come out, emerge.
יָצָא
This is the root’s basic movement, the going out that the verse asks another person to make possible.
hotsi: Bring out, cause to go out.
הוֹצִיא
This causative form gives the appeal its specific shape: someone acts so that another can leave confinement.
THE PATTERN
In Scripture, being remembered is relational: it carries a person or their need toward favor, advocacy, or response.
Remember me, O LORD, with the favor you bear toward your people. Visit me with your deliverance. And God heard and responded to their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. And he said to Jesus, Lord, remember me when you come into your governance.THE THREAD
And God heard and responded to their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. The Hebrew root זכר (zakar, remember or bring to mind) appears in both verses. Genesis asks that remembering become mention before Pharaoh; Exodus places the same kind of remembering beside groaning and covenant, showing memory joined to the need for release.
