King James wording
King James Version
And Pharaoh said unto Joseph, See, I have set thee over all the land of Egypt.THE KEY
What Pharaoh calls “set” is nathan (נָתַן, natan, “give/place”), and what he sets over Egypt is Yosef (יוֹסֵף, Yosef, “he adds”), increase placed across Mitzrayim (מִצְרַיִם, Mitzrayim, “the two narrows”).
THE MEANING
The place that narrows you does not determine the full scope available to you. Here, authority arrives as placement: Joseph, whose name carries “he adds,” is set over the whole land of Egypt, the two narrows.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that being inside a constricting place means you can only be shaped by it; here, new capacity is placed over its whole terrain.
THE ROOT
נָתַתִּי
nathatti
GROWS FROM
נ־ת־ן
n-t-n
give, set, place
The verb translated “set” is the same verb used for giving and placing: authority here is an entrusted placement. Its word family makes the appointment concrete, a place over the whole land is given to Joseph.
ALSO GROWS
mattanah: gift, present
מַתָּנָה
The appointment carries the sense of something given, not seized.
nathun: given, placed
נָתוּן
This passive form echoes Joseph’s position as someone placed into a role.
יוֹסֵף
Yosef
GROWS FROM
י־ס־ף
y-s-p
add, increase, continue
The name carries the verb “add” or “increase.” In the same sentence where Joseph is placed over Egypt, the one whose name holds increase receives the whole constricting field as his scope.
ALSO GROWS
yasaf: add, increase, continue
יָסַף
This verb is the seed carried in Joseph’s name.
tosefet: addition, increase
תּוֹסֶפֶת
The noun branch makes the name’s sense of increase tangible.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צ־ר־ר
ts-r-r
bind, press in, constrict
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim is heard through tzar as “the two narrows.” The phrase “all the land” makes the scope complete: Joseph is placed over the entire constricting terrain, not just one corner of it.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: narrow, tight; a distressing place
צַר
This branch gives the constricted sense heard in the name Mitzrayim.
metzar: a narrow place, strait, or distress
מֵצַר
The narrow place is the terrain over which Joseph is placed.
THE PATTERN
Authority takes the shape of a trust: someone is placed over a defined household, people, or land.
And Joseph found favor in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he placed into his hand. Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon. And the Lord said, "Who then is the steady and wise steward whom his lord will set over his household, to give them their measure of grain in due season?"THE THREAD
And Joseph found favor in his eyes, and he served him; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he placed into his hand. The same root, natan (נָתַן, give, set, place), appears as “put” when all that Potiphar has is placed in Joseph’s hand. Here that entrusted scope widens from one household to an entire land.
