King James wording
King James Version
And Joseph gathered corn as the sand of the sea, very much, until he left numbering; for it was without number.THE KEY
The abundance is so concrete that counting, not lack, is what runs out.
THE MEANING
Provision can become so abundant that counting no longer contains it. The grain remains physical and gathered even when its total escapes the count; the verse holds stored provision and unmeasurable surplus together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that provision only becomes real when it can be fully measured: here, the grain is present even after the count stops.
THE ROOT
לִסְפֹּר
lispor
GROWS FROM
ס־פ־ר
to count or recount, including telling or recounting an account
“numbering” in this verse is lispor. This root carries counting and recounting together: a number can be tallied, recorded, or told as an account. When the grain is “without number,” the store exceeds not only a finished tally but what can be fully recounted.
ALSO GROWS
safar: to count, reckon, or recount
סָפַר
This is the verb behind “numbering”; Joseph gathers until the act of counting gives way.
sefer: book, scroll, or written record
סֵפֶר
The same root reaches from counting into what can be recorded, sharpening the sense that no complete account can contain this store.
sippur: story, telling, or account
סִפּוּר
This branch links the count to recounting: the abundance exceeds what can be fully told as well as tallied.
וַיִּצְבֹּר
vayitzbor
GROWS FROM
צ־ב־ר
to heap up or accumulate
“heaped up” in this verse is vayitzbor. The verb pictures more than a general collection: grain is heaped into a tangible reserve. That physical accumulation remains present even when its quantity outruns counting.
ALSO GROWS
tsavar: to heap up or accumulate
צָבַר
The root’s basic action makes Joseph’s gathering a buildup of actual stores.
tzevirah: accumulation or collecting
צְבִירָה
This related noun keeps the sense of accumulated substance: the abundance is held in a growing store, not left as an abstraction.
THE PATTERN
When abundance exceeds human counting, the text uses the failure of counting itself to measure its scale.
And he led him outside, and said, Look up toward the heavens, and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And he said to him, So will your seed be.Many are the works you make, O LORD my God, the wonders, and your plans toward us. They cannot be laid in rows before you. If I would recount them and speak them, they are more than can be numbered. After this I see, and look, a great crowd that no one can number, from every nation and tribe and people and tongue, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, wrapped in white robes, with palm branches in their hands.THE THREAD
Many are the works you make, O LORD my God, the wonders, and your plans toward us. They cannot be laid in rows before you. If I would recount them and speak them, they are more than can be numbered.Genesis says Joseph’s grain outruns counting; Psalm says the LORD’s works and thoughts toward you do too. Both use the same Hebrew root for counting and recounting, joining stored provision to an abundance that cannot be fully tallied or told.
