What Does Genesis 42:21 Mean?
And they said to one another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the narrow place of his living soul when he pleaded with us for favor, and we did not hear and respond. Therefore this narrow place has come upon us.
Key words are shown with the Hebrew or Greek and what each word meant.

King James wording
King James Version
And they said one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we saw the anguish of his soul, when he besought us, and we would not hear; therefore is this distress come upon us.THE KEY
The Hebrew uses the same word-family for his anguish and their distress: the pain they left unheard is now their own constriction.
THE MEANING
Here you can see how witnessed pain stays present in the one who turns away: the anguish is named with the same word as the distress now felt. “Besought” carries the sense of seeking favor, and “hear” carries the force of responding. Their confession begins when that connection becomes visible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this dissolves is that another person’s plea ends at the moment you refuse it. The verse shows the neglected anguish remaining joined to the hearer’s own distress.
THE ROOT
צָרַת
tsarat
GROWS FROM
צרר
tsarar
To bind, confine, or press into a narrow place.
“the narrow place of his living soul” in this verse is tsarat. The Hebrew uses forms from the same word-family for the brother’s anguish and the distress that has come upon them. The English gives them different words, while the Hebrew keeps the constriction linked: the pain they witnessed has not become separate from their own reckoning.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, tight
צַר
This branch gives the image beneath distress: being pressed into a constricted place.
tsarah: Distress, trouble
צָרָה
This is the word-family used for both the brother’s anguish and the distress they now name.
בְּהִתְחַנְּנוֹ
behitchanneno
GROWS FROM
חנן
chanan
To show favor or be gracious.
“pleaded with us for favor” in this verse is behitchanneno. His plea is framed as seeking favor from them. The word carries a request for a favorable response, making their refusal more specific than simply failing to notice his suffering.
ALSO GROWS
chen: Favor
חֵן
This names what the plea seeks: favor from the people who have power to respond.
chanan: Show favor, be gracious
חָנַן
The verb reveals the kind of response his begging calls for, and which they withhold.
שָׁמָעְנוּ
shama'nu
GROWS FROM
שמע
shama
To hear, heed, and respond.
“did not hear and respond” in this verse is shama'nu. Their words say they would not hear him, but the root can carry hearing through into response. The verse connects the plea they refused to answer with their present recognition of its weight.
ALSO GROWS
shema: Hear and respond
שְׁמַע
This familiar form makes clear that hearing can mean more than receiving sound; it can include answering what is heard.
shemuah: Report, news
שְׁמוּעָה
This branch is something heard and received, while the verse names a plea they chose not to receive responsively.
THE PATTERN
A plea a person refuses to answer remains connected to that person’s own distress, while true hearing moves toward response.
Whoever stops up his ear to the cry of the emptied one also cries out, and is not answered. You shall not press on any widow or fatherless child. If you press them down in any way, and they cry out at all to me, I will surely hear and respond to their cry.If a brother or sister is naked, and left without the nourishment of the day, And one of you says to them, Go in wholeness, be warmed and filled, but you do not give them what the body needs. What is the profit?THE THREAD
The aligned cry out, and the LORD hears, and snatches them out of all their narrow places. This verse uses the same Hebrew word-family for “troubles” as Genesis uses for anguish and distress, and the same root for “heareth” as the brothers use when they admit they did not hear. Where Genesis names refusal, this verse joins hearing with deliverance from constriction.
