King James wording
King James Version
And he turned himself about from them, and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.THE KEY
Joseph hears his brothers confess “we would not hear,” then binds Simeon, whose name means “hearing”, before their eyes.
THE MEANING
You can feel real grief and still take an action that binds someone; neither truth cancels the other. Joseph turns away to weep, returns, speaks, and binds Simeon in full view of his brothers. The scene leaves sorrow and coercion side by side.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Feeling sorrow over a painful action does not undo the restraint or make it harmless.
THE ROOT
שִׁמְעוֹן
Shimʿon
GROWS FROM
שמע
sh-m-ʿ
To hear, listen, or heed.
The brothers have just said they did not hear their pleading brother, and Simeon’s name carries the same hearing-root. When Joseph binds him, their confession is echoed by the name of the brother placed under restraint.
ALSO GROWS
shamaʿ: To hear, listen, or heed.
שָׁמַע
This is the root behind Simeon’s name and the brothers’ confession that they would not hear Joseph.
shemuʿah: A report or news, something heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The root can name what is heard as well as the act of hearing, drawing the brothers’ confession and Simeon’s name into the same word-family.
וַיֶּאֱסֹר
wayyeʾsor
GROWS FROM
אסר
ʾ-s-r
To bind, tie, or restrain.
This root holds the binding action together with the state of being bound: a related noun names a prisoner. Simeon is not simply moved aside; the verse shows a brother made captive in full sight.
ALSO GROWS
ʾāsîr: A prisoner or captive.
אָסִיר
The same root names the person who is held by the binding described here.
maʾasār: Imprisonment or confinement.
מַאֲסָר
This branch extends the root from tying someone to the condition of being held.
וַיְדַבֵּר
waydabber
GROWS FROM
דבר
d-b-r
To speak; the related noun davar means a word, matter, or thing.
“spoke with” in this verse is waydabber. The verb וַיְדַבֵּר (waydabber, “and he spoke”) shares its root with דָּבָר (davar, “word” or “matter”). The speech sits inside a concrete sequence, he speaks, takes, binds, so the word is part of the matter unfolding.
ALSO GROWS
davar: A word, matter, or thing.
דָּבָר
The shared root links Joseph’s speaking with the matter that immediately unfolds.
dibber: He spoke.
דִּבֵּר
This form makes the speaking action explicit and shares its root with davar, “word” or “matter.”
THE PATTERN
Grief can remain hidden or become visible while a consequential encounter continues.
And Joseph hurried, for his compassion was warmed toward his brother. And he sought where to weep, and he entered into his inner room, and wept there. And Esther spoke again before the king, and fell down at his feet, and pleaded with him for favor with tears, to carry away the evil of Haman the Agagite, and the plot he had woven against the Jews. And when he drew near, perceiving the city, he wept over it.THE THREAD
And they said to one another, We are truly guilty concerning our brother, for we saw the narrow place of his living soul when he pleaded with us for favor, and we did not hear and respond. Therefore this narrow place has come upon us.The phrase “would not hear” uses שָׁמַע (shamaʿ, “hear”), the root carried in Simeon’s name, שִׁמְעוֹן (Shimʿon, “hearing”). When Joseph binds Simeon in the next verse, his name makes the brothers’ confession echo through the act.
