This verse in the King James

King James wording
Then Joseph commanded to fill their sacks with corn, and to restore every man’s money into his sack, and to give them provision for the way: and thus did he unto them.

Yosef (“He adds”) makes provision a return: the brothers receive food for the road with the money they thought they had spent.

Your way is met with nourishment and return at once: the sacks hold grain for the journey and money sent back into them. What sustains the next stretch travels beside what is restored to you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief this undoes is that receiving what you need means losing the resources already in your hands.

יוֹסֵף

Yosef

GROWS FROM

י־ס־ף

y-s-f

The root yasaf (⁨יָסַף⁩) means to add or increase; Yosef means “he adds.”

“Joseph” in this verse is Yosef. Yosef (⁨יוֹסֵף⁩; “he adds”) orders provision in layers: grain fills the sacks, money returns, and food is given for the road. His name gathers the surplus into one image: what sustains their journey comes with what they believed they had spent.

ALSO GROWS

yasaf: To add, increase.

יָסַף

This verb is the seed of Yosef’s name and echoes the added provision in the verse.

hosif: To add, increase; the causative form of the root.

הוֹסִיף

The same root carries the sense of increasing what is present, as food is placed with the returned money.

וּלְהָשִׁיב

ulehashiv

GROWS FROM

שׁ־ו־ב

sh-w-b

The root shuv (⁨שׁוּב⁩) means to turn or return.

“returned” in this verse is ulehashiv. The verb lehashiv (⁨לְהָשִׁיב⁩; “to return”) grows from shuv, the motion of turning back. Each man’s money is turned back into his sack while he is sent forward, so the provision carries a literal return into the next stretch.

ALSO GROWS

shuv: To turn, return.

שׁוּב

This is the root movement behind the money being sent back into each sack.

teshuvah: Return, turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This noun preserves the same motion of coming back, made concrete here by the money’s return.

Provision for the way can arrive alongside the return of what was already given.

For the LORD your God has blessed you in all the works of your hand; he has known your walking through this great wilderness. These forty years the LORD your God has been with you; you have lacked nothing.
Deuteronomy 2:7 · SDVThe journey through the wilderness is held together by provision, until nothing needed is lacking.
Then the LORD said to Moses, Look, I will rain bread for you from the heavens. The people shall go out and gather each day's portion on its day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my instruction or not.
Exodus 16:4 · SDVBread is supplied for the people’s daily way, arriving before they gather it.
Look at the birds of the air, for they do not sow, nor reap, nor gather into storehouses; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much better than they?
Matthew 6:26 · SDVThe birds’ nourishment comes without being stored or secured by their own labor.
And he said to his brothers, My silver is returned. Behold, it is even in my sack. And their heart went out of them, and they trembled, saying to one another, What is this that God has done to us?
Genesis 42:28 · SDV

The same root, shuv (⁨שׁוּב⁩; “turn, return”), names the money’s return in both verses. Verse 25 places it quietly in the sack; verse 28 makes the return visible, turning provision into a question they cannot yet read.
