This verse in the King James

King James wording
We be twelve brethren, sons of our father; one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

The family remains named as twelve even while one brother is absent and the youngest stays with their father.

A bond can remain named while absence is spoken plainly. The brothers still say, “we are twelve,” while one is not with them and the youngest is with their father in Canaan. The sentence holds belonging, absence, and nearness together.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that absence cancels belonging: one brother is missing, yet he remains in the brothers’ count.

הַקָּטֹן

haqqāṭōn

GROWS FROM

קטנ

q-ṭ-n

To be small or little; as an adjective, small or young.

The word translated “youngest” is formed from the language of smallness: he is the “small one.” The verse places the absent brother beside the little one who remains with the father, without letting either fact cancel the other.

ALSO GROWS

qāṭān: Small, little.

קָטָן

This masculine form makes clear that the root’s basic sense is smallness, which the verse applies to the youngest.

qĕṭannāh: Small, little (feminine form).

קְטַנָּה

The same root describes smallness across grammatical forms, linking the youngest’s age to the language of being little.

Absence can be spoken plainly without erasing a person’s place in a bond.

And he turned back to his brothers, and said, The child is not, and I, where shall I go?
Genesis 37:30 · SDVThe child’s absence is spoken directly, yet he is still named within the bond between the brothers.
And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one. His brother is dead, and he alone is left to his mother, and his father loves him.
Genesis 44:20 · SDVThe youngest remains described through his ties to his father, even as the family names absence and loss.
For this son of mine was dead, and is living again; he had lost his way, and is found." And they began to be glad.
Luke 15:24 · SDVEven when the son is described as lost and dead, the bond remains in the words “my son.”
And we said to my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one. His brother is dead, and he alone is left to his mother, and his father loves him.
Genesis 44:20 · SDV

The same root ⁨קטנ⁩ (q-ṭ-n) appears in “youngest” here and “a little one” there. That repeated language makes the youngest’s smallness vivid: he is the little one who remains with his father.
