King James wording
King James Version
And they made ready the present against Joseph came at noon: for they heard that they should eat bread there.THE KEY
The “readiness” here is an act of setting something firmly in place before the encounter arrives.
THE MEANING
You stand at the edge of a meeting: the gift is ready, and bread is expected. Preparation gives the waiting a concrete shape, even though it cannot settle what the encounter will bring.
THE ROOT
וַיָּכִינוּ
wayyākhînû
GROWS FROM
כון
Kun means to establish, make firm, or set in place.
“made ready the gift” in this verse is wayyākhînû. The verb translated “made ready” carries the sense of setting something in place. The gift is prepared as a settled, tangible part of the brothers’ approach while they await Joseph and the meal.
ALSO GROWS
nakhon: firm, established, ready
נָכוֹן
This same root describes something made firm; readiness here likewise means being set in place.
mākhôn: a fixed place or base
מָכוֹן
A base is what has been established in position, linking the brothers’ preparation with the root’s sense of giving something its place.
THE PATTERN
A gift gives visible form to the approach between people.
And you shall also say, Look, your servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will cover his face with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see him. Perhaps he will lift up my face.A man's giving widens room for him, and leads him before great men.And when they had entered the house, they perceived the young child with Mary his mother, and fell to the ground and bowed down before him. And when they had opened their treasures, they brought him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.THE THREAD
My heart is set firm, O God, my heart is set firm. I sing and pluck the strings. The Hebrew verb behind “made ready” comes from כון (kun), meaning to establish or make firm; “fixed” in this psalm comes from the same root. That kinship lets the gift appear as something deliberately set in place while the brothers wait for Joseph.
