This verse in the King James

King James wording
And they sat before him, the firstborn according to his birthright, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men marvelled one at another.

The brothers marvel because the order they never announced is already visible in the places set for them.

Your life has an order you may not see from inside it; here, the brothers find their birth sequence recognized in the places set before them. They marvel at one another because the arrangement reveals knowledge they did not supply, and the wonder arrives before an explanation.

תָּמַהּ

tamah

GROWS FROM

תמה

To be astonished; to wonder.

“were stunned” in this verse is tamah. The verb ⁨תמה⁩ names the shock of seeing something that does not fit what one expected. Here the brothers’ amazement is mutual: each looks at the others as the unexplained order confronts them all.

ALSO GROWS

tamah: To be astonished; to wonder.

תָּמַהּ

This is the verb behind their reaction: they meet what they cannot yet explain with amazement.

timmahon: Astonishment; bewilderment.

תִּמָּהוֹן

This noun shows the same root can name the jolt of being confronted with something the heart cannot readily take in.

בְּכוֹר

bekhor

GROWS FROM

בכר

To be first or early; the firstborn.

The root links the firstborn with ⁨בִּכּוּרִים⁩, the first fruits: both name the first emergence in a sequence. The seating makes each brother’s birth order visible, and that precise ordering is what leaves them astonished.

ALSO GROWS

bekhor: Firstborn.

בְּכוֹר

The firstborn’s place begins the sequence by which Joseph seats the brothers.

bikkurim: First fruits; the earliest yield.

בִּכּוּרִים

Like the firstborn among siblings, the first fruits mark what comes first in a sequence.

When knowledge of what is hidden becomes visible, people meet recognition with wonder.

Such perceiving is too wonderful for me; it is high, and I cannot reach it.
Psalm 139:6 · SDVThe psalmist meets knowledge beyond his grasp with wonder.
And all who heard him were beside themselves at how he put things together, and at his answers.
Luke 2:47 · SDVThose listening are astonished when they encounter understanding they did not expect.
So the Jews marveled, saying, How does this man know letters, having never learned?
John 7:15 · SDVPeople marvel when someone’s knowledge exceeds what they think they know about him.
The LORD shall strike you with wandering, and with blindness, and with a stunned heart.
Deuteronomy 28:28 · SDV

“Astonishment of heart” uses ⁨תִּמָּהוֹן⁩, from the same root as the brothers’ “marvelled.” This root can name a heart stunned by what it cannot take in, so their wonder is a disturbance of understanding as much as amazement.
