King James wording
King James Version
Then they speedily took down every man his sack to the ground, and opened every man his sack.THE KEY
The opening happens one sack at a time: what each person carries becomes accessible.
THE MEANING
Each man lowers his own sack to the ground and opens it; the action reaches every person in the group. What is inside comes into view one container at a time.
THE ROOT
וַיִּפְתְּחוּ
wayyiftəḥu
GROWS FROM
פתח
p-t-ḥ
To open; to make an opening.
“opened” in this verse is wayyiftəḥu. This root also gives the Hebrew words for a doorway and a key: opening creates access to what was closed in. Here each sack becomes an opening into what it carries, and the repeated action makes the disclosure individual.
ALSO GROWS
pétaḥ: A doorway or entrance; an opening through which one passes.
פֶּתַח
The sack’s opening becomes the point of entry to its hidden contents.
maftēaḥ: A key, the thing used to open.
מַפְתֵּחַ
The shared root links opening with access: what is shut becomes reachable.
THE PATTERN
What is concealed becomes visible through opening, one container or record at a time.
And as one of them opened his sack to feed his donkey at the inn, he saw his silver. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. For there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be known. And I see the dead, small and great, standing before God. The scrolls are opened, and another scroll is opened, which is the book of life. The dead are judged by the things written in the scrolls, according to their works.THE THREAD
And as one of them opened his sack to feed his donkey at the inn, he saw his silver. Behold, it was in the mouth of his sack. The same Hebrew opening root appears when one brother opens his sack and finds silver inside. Here that single opening becomes universal: every sack is opened, and what each contains is exposed.
