King James wording
King James Version
And he searched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest: and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.THE KEY
The cup’s discovery comes through an ordered search that ends with Benjamin, the “son of the right hand,” making exposure itself feel like a verdict.
THE MEANING
When your life is under examination, the order of the search can shape what its result seems to say about you. The search moves from the eldest to the youngest, and the cup is found with Benjamin; the discovery arrives already framed as evidence. Yet the place where an object is found does not, by itself, tell the whole truth about the person carrying it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that an object found in your keeping is, by itself, proof of your guilt.
THE ROOT
מָצָא
māṣāʾ
GROWS FROM
מצא
To find, encounter, or come upon.
The verb behind “was found” also describes encountering or coming upon something. Here the cup’s discovery is a real event, but the root itself does not make that discovery a verdict about Benjamin.
ALSO GROWS
matsa ḥen: To find favor.
מָצָא חֵן
The same verb can name an encounter with favor, showing that “finding” carries its meaning from what is encountered, not from the verb alone.
matsa menoach: To find rest.
מָצָא מְנוֹחַ
As with the cup, the verb names what is found; the thing discovered does not, by itself, explain the whole person or situation.
וַיְחַפֵּשׂ
vayḥappēs
GROWS FROM
חפש
To search out or investigate.
“searched” in this verse is vayḥappēs. This is active scrutiny: the sacks are examined in a stated order, from eldest to youngest. The search establishes where the cup is found, but the act of searching does not establish what that finding proves.
ALSO GROWS
ḥippēs: He searched or sought out.
חִפֵּשׂ
This form shows the root as deliberate examination, as in the steward’s search.
məḥappēs: Searching; one who searches.
מְחַפֵּשׂ
The searching person is part of the action, keeping attention on how the discovery is made.
בִּנְיָמִין
Binyamin
GROWS FROM
ימן
יָמִין (yamin) means right hand or right side; Benjamin is “son of the right hand.”
“Benjamin” in this verse is Binyamin. The youngest is named for the right hand, a name carrying strength and favor. Here the one bearing that name is also the one whose sack becomes the focus of suspicion, so the finding presses against the meaning carried in his name.
ALSO GROWS
yamin: Right hand or right side.
יָמִין
This is the name’s meaning-bearing element: Benjamin is the son of the right hand.
teman: South; the direction associated with the right side when facing east.
תֵּימָן
This related directional word preserves the Hebrew link between rightness of side and orientation.
THE PATTERN
A finding becomes a verdict when suspicion directs the search before the evidence appears.
Then the princes and the governors sought to find a charge against Daniel concerning the kingdom, but they could find no charge or slip, for he was steady, and neither slip nor rot was found in him.For we have found this man a plague, and a stirrer of uprisings among all the Jews throughout the inhabited earth, and one who stands at the front of the division of the Nazarenes. Then Pilate said to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.THE THREAD
And Judah said, What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how shall we be aligned? God has found the crookedness of your servants. Look, we are my lord's servants, both we and he also with whom the cup is found. The same root מָצָא (matsa, to find or encounter) appears in “God hath found out” and again in “with whom the cup is found.” The repeated verb connects the physical discovery in the sack with Judah’s words about what has been exposed in the brothers.
