This verse in the King James

King James wording
And Judah said, What shall we say unto my lord? what shall we speak? or how shall we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy servants: behold, we are my lord’s servants, both we, and he also with whom the cup is found.

The same Hebrew verb says God “finds” the brothers’ crookedness and that the cup “is found” in Benjamin’s hand.

When what is hidden is found, explanation runs out: the question of how to clear yourself gives way to what is already exposed. The speech gathers every brother, including the one holding the cup, into one shared standing as servants. The cup’s discovery and the uncovering of crookedness occupy the same sentence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

That a persuasive defense can restore a clean standing after the hidden wrong has been found.

מָצָא

māṣāʾ

GROWS FROM

מצא

To find, come upon, or encounter.

Hebrew repeats the root ⁨מצא⁩ within the verse: God finds their crookedness, and the cup is found with Benjamin. The wording binds inward exposure and outward evidence together, so Judah’s question about clearing themselves comes after the finding has already named them.

ALSO GROWS

māṣāʾ: To find, encounter.

מָצָא

This is God’s action in the verse: the hidden crookedness comes into view.

nimṣāʾ: Is found, is discovered.

נִמְצָא

The same root reappears for the cup in Benjamin’s hand, linking the brothers’ exposed guilt with the visible evidence.

נִּצְטַדָּק

niṣṭaddāq

GROWS FROM

צדק

To be right or just, to stand in alignment.

“be aligned” in this verse is niṣṭaddāq. The verb’s reflexive form asks how they can establish themselves as right. Its placement beside God’s finding brings the question into contact with what is already exposed: self-clearing cannot undo what has come into view.

ALSO GROWS

ṣedeq: Justice, rightness, alignment.

צֶדֶק

The base noun names the rightness Judah asks whether they can claim for themselves.

ṣaddîq: A just, right, or aligned person.

צַדִּיק

This form applies the same root to a person who stands in alignment.

What is concealed cannot remain outside the reach of finding; once it surfaces, it changes a person’s ability to claim innocence.

But if you will not do so, look, you have missed the mark against the LORD, and know that your falling short will find you.
Numbers 32:23 · SDVThe same Hebrew root makes sin itself the thing that finds those who would leave it hidden.
For there is nothing covered that will not be uncovered, and nothing hidden that will not be known.
Luke 12:2 · SDVWhat is covered comes into the open, leaving no hidden place beyond what can be known.
But if you will not do so, look, you have missed the mark against the LORD, and know that your falling short will find you.
Numbers 32:23 · SDV

Genesis repeats the root ⁨מצא⁩ for God finding the crookedness and the cup being found; Numbers makes the same root the verb of sin itself finding those who hide it. What was hidden reaches the one trying to leave it behind.
