King James wording
King James Version
And thy servant my father said unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two sons:THE KEY
The father still counts the missing son among the two Rachel bore him: absence has not erased belonging.
THE MEANING
A person can be out of sight and still remain held within a family’s story. The father names both sons as born from his wife; the one who is missing is not removed from that bond.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Absence does not prove that someone has ceased to belong. The father’s words still hold both sons together, even as one is treated as lost.
THE ROOT
יָלְדָה
yāledāh
GROWS FROM
ילד
To bear, bring forth, or beget.
“brought forth” in this verse is yāledāh. The verb יָלְדָה (yāledāh, “bore”) belongs to the same root family as the word for a child and the act of begetting. The father’s words keep the bond created at birth present: both sons remain Rachel’s and his, though one is missing from his sight.
ALSO GROWS
yeled: Child, boy
יֶלֶד
The child is named by the same root family as the act of bearing, keeping birth and belonging connected.
holid: Beget, father
הוֹלִיד
This form describes bringing a child forth and echoes the parent-child bond in “bare me two sons.”
THE PATTERN
Belonging persists in speech when a loved one is absent, lost, or presumed gone.
And he perceived it, and said, It is my son's coat. An evil beast has devoured him. Joseph is without doubt torn to pieces. Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she would not have compassion on the son of her womb? Even they may forget, but I will not forget you.For this son of mine was dead, and is living again; he had lost his way, and is found." And they began to be glad.THE THREAD
And she conceived and bore a son, and said, God has gathered away my reproach. The word “bare” here and in the account of Rachel’s first son comes from ילד (y-l-d), “to bear, bring forth.” The earlier verse identifies the birth behind these words: one of Rachel’s two sons is Joseph, the one now missing.
