King James wording
King James Version
And told him, saying, Joseph is yet alive, and he is governor over all the land of Egypt. And Jacob’s heart fainted, for he believed them not.THE KEY
The report says life already governs Egypt’s narrowing, while Jacob’s heart cannot yet become firm enough to receive it.
THE MEANING
The news reaches you with life already present, but your heart may still go numb before it can trust what is true. The delay between hearing and becoming firm does not make the life unreal.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A numb heart does not prove that the report of life is false.
THE ROOT
הֶאֱמִין
he'emin
GROWS FROM
אמן
ʾ-m-n
To be firm or steady; hence, to trust or believe.
“did not lean his weight on them” in this verse is he'emin. Jacob cannot yet become firm in what his brothers say; the root presents belief as trust that can take hold within a person. The Hebrew phrase לִבּוֹ וַיָּפָג (libbo vayafog, “his heart grew numb”) shows how that inability to trust is felt: the news of life arrives before his heart can receive it.
ALSO GROWS
emunah: Trust, steadfastness.
אֱמוּנָה
It grows from the same root, showing belief as a steadiness that can be leaned on.
amen: Firm; truly; so be it.
אָמֵן
The familiar response carries the same sense of firmness and reliability held inside “believe.”
חַי
chai
GROWS FROM
חיה
ḥ-y-h
To live; to be alive.
“alive” in this verse is chai. Joseph is not only remembered as someone Jacob lost; the word says he is living now. The root carries life as an active reality that persists even while Jacob’s heart is still numb to the report.
ALSO GROWS
chayyim: Life; living.
חַיִּים
The related word makes Joseph’s “alive” part of a wider language of life, not merely a report about his survival.
Chavah: The living one; Eve.
חַוָּה
Her name carries the same life-word, making life a nature held in a name.
מִצְרַיִם
Mitzrayim
GROWS FROM
צרר
ṣ-r-r
To bind, confine, or press into a narrow place.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzrayim. Mitzrayim carries tzar, “narrow” or “constricted,” with the dual ending -ayim: the two narrows. The report places Joseph as governor over this whole constricted land, announcing life and authority within the very place named for narrowing.
ALSO GROWS
tsar: Narrow, tight, constricted.
צַר
This word gives the narrowness carried in the name Mitzrayim.
metzar: A narrow place; a strait.
מֵצַר
It makes the image of confinement concrete: a place where movement is pressed into a tight passage.
THE PATTERN
A life-changing truth can be present before the heart can take it in as real.
A Song of degrees. When the LORD turned again the return of Zion, we were like dreamers. At once the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I lean my weight on you. Help where I cannot lean. And while they still did not trust for joy and were wondering, he said to them, Do you have anything here to eat?THE THREAD
And he leaned his weight on the LORD, and he counted it to him as alignment.Genesis 15:6 and 45:26 use the same root, אמן, for believing: one becomes firm in the LORD’s word, while Jacob cannot yet become firm in his brothers’ report. The root pictures trust as a steadiness that lets a word take hold.
